“Does that B&B we’re going to have two rooms?”

“Mmm. I don’t think so, but there might be a separate area I can put a cot in for Delaney.”

“It’s not exactly private, but it’s something.”

I rolled so I could see him. “We’re not always going to have privacy with a kid at home.”

His lips twitched. “I’m adventurous. I can figure it out.”

Pleasure hummed in my body, my skin tingling with the aftermath of our lovemaking. I’d never get enough of this man. I just hoped he was strong enough to stay present with me. I didn’t need him by my side, but I sure as hell liked it.

After a few more minutes of snuggling, I sat up. “We should get ready.”

We heard a knock on the door.

Mac swore as he got up and pulled on his briefs.

“He’s early. I’m sorry.”

“I should have known.”

I stood behind him, wrapping my arms around his middle and kissing his shoulder blade. “It was worth it.”

He turned in my arms and kissed me hard. “I think so too. I’ll grab the door.”

Any moment we got together was worth whatever trouble we went through to get it. We rushed to throw on our clothes. I ran a brush through my hair and heard the door open and male voices. It wouldn’t be good for those two to get into a confrontation with Delaney present. I hurried to the front of the apartment.

Mac had leaned down to hug Delaney, and she looked up at him. “You’re here.”

“Yeah, I kept your mom company while you were with your dad. We had dinner too.”

Carter raised a brow as he looked from Mac to me. He knew exactly what we’d been doing, and when a muscle ticked over his jaw, I knew he didn’t like it. Was it that I’d moved on with someone?

I couldn’t tell with Carter. Sometimes he treated women as if they were a new toy he wanted to show off, but they eventually lost their shine and his interest. I was fairly positive he didn’t want me or our marriage. It might be a pride thing that I’d moved on when his life was imploding. But whatever he was thinking or feeling didn’t mean anything to me anymore.

“Did you have a good time at dinner?” I asked Delaney.

“We ate pizza.”

“The brick-oven place?” I asked Carter.

“I’m sure there’s only one place. This town is small.” His voice was tinged with barely disguised irritation.

If he didn’t like Telluride, I could only hope he’d leave.

“Can I see her on Saturday?” Carter asked me.

“Can we talk outside?” I moved without waiting for him to respond. Outside, with the door carefully shut behind us, I said, “I don’t want to discuss visitation in front of Delaney.”

He rolled his eyes. “Not everything is a legal thing. I just want to see my daughter.”

I crossed my arms over my chest. “I make those decisions. That’s what you agreed to when you wanted the divorce. It’s not healthy for us to discuss this in front of her.”

He gestured between us. “You’re making this adversarial.”

“I’m protecting my daughter. You can’t show up here after all these months and think you can slip back into our lives again. We have things to do.” I looked away and sighed. “Maybe we should come up with a schedule.”

He kicked his toe in the dirt. “I won’t be sticking around long enough for that.”
