Tommaso curses beneath his breath, then leans across the bar and crooks his finger at me.

I lean forward.

“Listen, Riley. Innocent or not, I can’t help you. No one here can. Best advice I can offer is to avoid Sandro until his anger subsides.”

“How long will that take?” I whisper.

“Fuck if I know.”

“I didn’t betray him.”

Tommaso opens then closes his mouth.

“What? Please, tell me.”

He glances around before giving in. “He knows that.”

I stiffen. “He’s aware I had no part in what happened.”

“Yeah. We interviewed Ciro’s girlfriend, who confirmed it.”

My body goes cold. Oh my God. Kelly? “Did he hurt her?”

“I’ve said enough. Just drop it.” He tries to step back, but I reach across the bar and snatch hold of his arm, the drink in my other hand spilling over the bar.

He frees himself with a jerk, his alarmed expression changing to pure panic as he looks past me. But I want the truth.

“Did he kill her, too?”

“Goddamnit.”

I grab the bar top to steady myself. My reaction spooks Tommaso, who jumps back and away from me.

“God, he’s a complete monster, isn’t he?”

Tommaso’s jaw tightens. Too late, I realize the cause.

“Am I interrupting something?” Sandro says in a tone that can only be described as deadly.

CHAPTER TWELVE

The color drains from Tommaso’s face. “Boss … no. She asked if you plan on killing her,” he sputters. “I was just trying to …”

“Reassure her? Comfort her?”

I spin around, then gasp at Sandro’s expression. It’s even uglier than earlier, anger transforming his battered face into a monstrous one. Bruised eyes, busted lip, and broken skin are one thing. The blistering fury within his bloodshot eyes is another.

“What did you do to my best friend?”

“Best friend?” Sandro snorts. “She threw you under the bus. Blamed her boyfriend’s accident on you.”

I flinch. Our relationship was strained. But does Kelly truly believe I’m involved in Ciro’s … “Accident?”

Ignoring my question, Sandro spins and snaps at Tommaso, “You still standing here?”

“She’s innocent …”

“Not for long.”
