Page 222 of Dangerous as Sin

Sandro searches my expression, and I suddenly nausea rolls through me. “That disloyal asshole. He knew!” I push Sandro’s chest hard, forcing him to step back so I can stand. “It was his building. He set you up.” My eyes lock on Sandro’s. “He used me to hurt you.”

“And I walked right into it,” he snarls, “like some naive fuckhead.”

I flinch at the venom in his tone, and instinctively reach out to touch his face. To comfort him, a dangerous predator who has discovered he is as vulnerable as anyone else.

Sandro brushes my hand away.

“Everyone is vulnerable.”

“Your bullshit therapist tell you that?” He snags my wrist and tugs me into him. “In my world, one wrong move, and families crumble.” I struggle to free myself, but he’s wrapped an arm around my waist and has me anchored against him. “I’ll be damned if I’m the brother who’ll ruin the Beneventi empire. I allowed emotion to overrun common sense.”

I still, his words penetrating deeply.

Emotion …

“Lesson fucking learned.” His hand cups my bottom, and I’m lifted onto my toes until I’m flush against his groin. “I take what I want. On my terms and under my conditions. But don’t expect anything in return.”

He abruptly frees me, and I’m forced to grab his arm to keep from falling.

“Four times. Disconnect. Flee. They ambushed you, yet you made sure to warn me.”

He stiffens at my words.

“You saved my life.”

“I cut her, you know.”

My stomach drops. “Who?”

“Your so-called best friend.”

“You what?”

He presses a finger to his cheek and draws a diagonal line from his ear to the side of his upper lip.

I gasp, my eyes wide with horror. “Why?” I blurt out.

“She was in on it.”

“No. I don’t believe you.” I shake my head, my heart pounding. “She would have asked me a million questions if she knew about us.”

Except she stopped talking to me soon after I moved in with them. I thought it was because I confronted her about Ciro’s drug use.

“You’ve got shitty taste in friends, and even shittier taste in employers.”

“Is Kelly okay?” I demand.

“She’s alive. So long as she keeps her trap shut.”

Cold. So cold. And twisted beyond recognition.

“Let me go home.”

“Not until I’m done with you.”

I step backward. “When will that be?”

“Fuck if I know.” He steps forward, loving the chase. Except this isn’t a mutually agreed upon game.
