“Where are you going?” I demand. “Sandro—”
“Can’t control everyone and everything.” He moves away. “I’m off to live life anonymous and free of the Beneventi curse.”
I roll off the stool, intent on stopping him. But he’s already halfway to the kitchen door. Halfway to accomplishing what I never will.
“Be careful,” I call out. We met less than twenty-four hours ago, but it feels like I know Renzo on a deeper level. Perhaps because I’m in love with his brother.
“Holy hell, Sandro …” I gasp, feeling the urgency to find him.
“I’m right here.”
I jump, discovering him only a few feet away.
“He used the key?”
My lips part in surprise. “You knew?”
“Yeah.” Sandro prowls closer. “I keep hoping he won’t use it and decide to get clean. This is the longest he’s stayed.”
“Because Conti is no longer a threat?”
“Because he’s curious how his pessimistic younger brother, who likes logic and order, who values the Beneventi family above all else, could risk it all for love.” Sandro falls to his knee, his hand around my ankle device.
It takes me a moment to understand.
“You removed it?”
“If you love someone, you set them free. Now, you have two choices, Riley. On the table by the kitchen doors is an airplane ticket. I’m honoring our bargain now that the threat is over.”
My heart beats wildly in anticipation … of choice number two. I stare up at him. Life won’t be easy with a man like him. But knowing that, my decision is still my choice. “I love you, Alessandro Beneventi.”
His grin is full of wicked promise. Like he plans on breaking me apart, then putting me back together. Setting me free in a way that’s for us to explain.
“And choice number two?” I ask.
“Run.”
