Drew gave me a confused look and Rat’s silence meant he was probably doing the same to the phone.

“Shit. Sorry, Rat, it’s just…that’s where Marina works.”

“Fuck,” Drew muttered and shifted on the seat of his bike.

“Who’s Marina?”

I ignored Rat’s question. There’d been more than once over the last month that I’d dropped her off—and picked her up—at the dive shop. “We have to go,” I told him and cut the connection.

Without another word, I started my bike and hightailed it out of the parking lot, knowing Drew would be on my ass. My heart thundered as we zipped in and out of traffic. We made good time, though it felt like it’d taken forever before we pulled into SeaScape’s parking lot.

I’d barely nudged the kickstand down before I was off my motorcycle and running into the shop. A man looked up, a concerned look on his face, when I flung the door open.

“Where did Marina go diving today?” I barked at him.

Drew came in behind me, glaring at the man behind the counter.

The guy blinked at us in confusion. “Excuse me?”

Anger flared, but I tried to contain it. “Where did Marina go diving?”

“I’m sorry, Sir, but I can’t-”

My control snapped. Stepping forward I grabbed a wad of the man’s shirt and hauled him halfway onto his counter so I could get into his face. “She’s in fucking trouble and if you don’t get me out to her now, I’ll fucking kill you.”

His eyes widened, mouth dropping open in shock, as he absorbed my words. “What kind of trouble?”

“Did this guy come in here today?” Drew asked as I dropped the shop owner back behind the counter. At least one of us was contained.

He smoothed out his shirt, but obediently looked down at the picture on Drew’s cellphone. “Yeah.” He tapped on his computer. “He was with our tour today. It just left a few minutes ago.”

“Do you have another boat?” I asked, gritting my teeth. This guy was wasting time.

“Well, yeah, but the captain doesn’t come in for another half hour.”

“Can you fucking drive a boat?” I snarled. If not, I’d do it and just hope I didn’t crash into something. Couldn’t be that hard, right?

“Yeah.” Now he sounded suspicious.

Good. He should.

Stepping around the counter, I grabbed a hold of his shirt again. “Get the keys.”

Dave—the dive shop owner—scowled at me as he pulled the boat in close to the one that’d taken Marina out this morning. He waved at the other man, who was coming to the side so we could speak.

Dave explained the situation and Greg frowned. “I haven’t seen them come up yet.” He motioned to the quiet water around us. It was as though he summoned them with his words as heads started popping up out of the water.

“That’s just unnatural,” Drew muttered. He was as much a desert rat as I was, so seeing people swimming below the surface was an oddity for him like it was me.

I waited impatiently, searching the faces emerging. Both boats puttered over to pick up the divers.

The woman who seemed to be in charge climbed the ladder into Greg’s boat. She looked around, worry flickering over her face. “Where’s Marina?”

I glared at Greg as he shook his head. “Isn’t she with you?”

“No, I turned around and she and her diver were gone. You haven’t picked them up?” Her eyes widened as she asked.

“Where would they be?” Drew asked her.
