He didn’t reply, merely pulling my hand from under my face and holding my arm up in front of my face.

The gasp I produced filled my lungs with too much air, making me dizzy. My eyes widened as I stared at my arm, once free from anything marring its skin, besides a couple of childhood scars. The same skin, which was now covered in at least a dozen small brands, spanning from shoulder to wrist. Like midnight black.

Unreal.

I sat up in a flash, flexing both arms in front of me, a second gap escaping when I spotted another set of the same sigils gracing my other arm. Tears welled in my eyes as a sob tore from my soul, recognition and realization engulfing me with too much emotion for me to bear.

“Do you know what they are?” Reaver asked, the deep bass in his voice somehow calming my frazzled nerves and bringing me back to the present.

I looked up at him, unable to see him through the blur of tears, so I blinked, bobbing my head, unable to pull back the feelings of shock and awe passionately vibrating through me.

“Tell me what this is?” he pressed on, worry and impatience in his eyes.

I vaguely wondered why he would be worried, when it was clear he didn’t give a shit about me, but I was too busy freaking out about everything that had happened in the last five minutes.

“Answer me, Reetah. Where do these brands come from?”

“Witch magic.”

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Reaver

Witch magic.

I narrowed my eyes, staring at her awe-struck face, my mind racing as I made sense of what had happened.

One moment she’d slapped me, and the next I was crashing into the wall across the room, her hit carrying the strength of a mystic.

I knew she wasn’t mortal, but I hadn’t expected her to be this powerful.

Unable to help myself, I scooped her into my arms and carried her to the couch, positioning her on my lap. When I rubbed small circles on her back, she stared at me with those big blue eyes, her back stiffening as she pulled away slightly.

“What are you doing?”

“What does it look like I’m doing?”

“Why are you being kind to me?”

“Would you prefer I go back to being a dick?”

Shaking her head, she gave me a small grin.

“Good. Now, relax.”

Her hesitation was short-lived, and she almost snuggled up to me, her temple resting on my shoulder.

“I need you to talk and tell me everything you know.”

“I already told you it’s my family’s magic.”

“I’ve met several witches in my many years of life, and I know that wasn’t the only thing happening to you.”

Lifting her head, she looked at me, an edge of anxiety in her gaze. “I swear to you, Reaver, I’m not hiding anything. My mom comes from a long line of powerful witches, but she’s only an earth witch. As the Stygian grows and infects the Crystal Forest, more and more of the witches in my family haven’t been able to go through the empowerment.”

“It seems you just went through yours.”

“Yeah…”
