“That's right, doll.” I dip to kiss her, and her breath sputters out emotionally. Small hands move to wrap my arm around her waist and she relaxes in my embrace.

“Promise me you will get him. I won’t feel safe until I know he’s gone, Ronan.”

“I promise to give myself to the abyss when I come face-to-face with him. I promise he will get the worst of me,” I vow.

“I love you.” Her quiet voice squeezes my chest.

“Finally accepting your punishment.” I smirk against her neck, my chin resting on her shoulder.

“Yes.”

“Good, punishments are no fun unless you're enjoying it with your favourite person.” I enlighten her.

“I’m your favourite person?” she asks, running a hand over Vinnie’s mane.

“Afraid so.” I grin. “I love you too, doll.”

“Seeing you like that scared me,” she croaks, but her body betrays her voice. She has melted into my hold, her heartbeat slowing and her limbs warming. Her neck tilts, and she lays her head on my shoulder.

“I don’t scare you, Cara. How you feel about me despite my violence scares you.” Cupping her face, I pull her back round and knock her hat away so I can brush my mouth over hers. Her gaze is drilling into mine, innocent and open. Her guard down, her heart unlatched and accepting of the brutality and pain this marriage will bring her, us. I’ve never been afraid to lose someone as I am her. “You scare me too, doll. I never expected you to become my biggest weakness. You're safe with me. If you need to be vulnerable with me, you can. You want to turn your fear to strength, then I’ll teach you. I’m here for the long run, Cara.”

“Okay.”

“This life and the next.”

“That's a long time.” Her soft voice has my eyes dropping to her curving lips.

“It’s not long enough. Marry me for real. Not because you were made to marry me, but because you want to stay.”

“Yes.” She cups my face and smiles at me. “Not even Connor could keep me away.”

“Brave girl.”

“Or stupid.” She chuckles, sighing, as she looks forwards, staring out across the hills.

“Never stupid.” I lift her ring finger and kiss it. “But you are mine. My calm amidst the chaos. My love. My wife.”
