“Why not?” Dani asked.

“Because you shot the legs out from under his brother in the dark. He won’t give you that edge in broad daylight,” Aaron said.

Dani blinked. “Oh. Right.” She sighed. “I don’t have an extra bed, but…”

“Do not worry about that. I have a very comfortable sleeping bag, and I’ll be camped out in the hallway. If anyone breaks into this house in the dark, they’ll have to come through me first, and I will not be aiming for his knees.”

Dani shuddered. “Thank you, Aaron. We hardly know each other, but this is above and beyond the bond of friendship.”

“Well, before this is over, we’re going to know evenmore about each other. I’m not scared of your past, if you aren’t scared of mine.” Then he held out his hand. “Deal?”

Dani didn’t hesitate. “Deal,” she said as they shook on it.

“I’ll see you later, and if you get scared, you know who to call,” he said.

“Ghostbusters?”

Aaron grinned.

“I’ve been called a lot of things on this job, but that’s a first. Lock the door behind me.”

“Oh. Wait,” Dani said, and ran into the other room, then came back carrying a key and a small remote, and handed them to him. “To the garage and the front door.”

Aaron’s fingers closed around them. “Right,” he said, then grabbed the file of photos and left.

Dani turned the lock, then went through the house making sure everything was locked. Afterward, she wrote an email to her new principal, letting her know that she was officially in residence in Jubilee, that she was looking forward to the new school year, and hit Send, then laid her head down on the desk and started to cry all over again. If only she could stay alive long enough to start the new year.

Chapter 9

Aaron returned to the precinct and went straight to the chief’s office and knocked.

“Come in,” Sonny said.

Aaron shut the door behind him as he entered, and laid the file back on Sonny’s desk.

“Ah, you’re back. What’s the verdict?” Sonny asked.

“Positive ID. This is the man she saw.”

“Excellent,” Sonny said. “I’ll let the sheriff know. He’ll take over the case from here. I’ll be calling in your Pope family to talk to them about this journal.”

“Our lead witness has a problem,” Aaron said.

Sonny glanced up. “What kind of problem?”

“It’s regarding Tony Bing, the man who’s in prison for trying to kill her,” Aaron said.

Sonny frowned. “If he’s in prison, then how can he be a problem?”

“Because his twin brother is not. Dani got a phone call from Bing’s mother this morning, warning Dani that Alex Bing, the twin, is in Jubilee, Kentucky. Apparently, Alex Bing threatened her life in the courtroom when his brother was sentenced. Dani was in hysterics when Igot to her house. I know this isn’t police business…yet. He hasn’t threatened her here or approached her in any way. But his previous behavior toward her precludes the assumption that he’s just here as a tourist.”

Sonny frowned. “You’re right about that. We have no reason to approach him at all, assuming we even knew where he was or what he looked like.”

“According to Dani, he and Tony are identical twins. All I have to do is pull up Tony Bing’s mugshot and go from there,” Aaron said.

Sonny frowned. “You can’t go vigilante on a citizen without a reason.”

“Not planning on it,” Aaron said. “But I will find out where he’s staying, and I am going to be the backup she needs when he comes calling.”
