“Here’s where the favor I need comes in because this pertains to the Charlie Raines investigation. I need you to contact all of the elders of the Pope family and bring them down to the station. The journal ishere. It’s still evidence in the case, but you can look at it and read some of the passages. It is, after all, your family’s history. We’re hoping someone knew about it, or knows what happened to it, to lead us to who the man was who dropped it in the parking lot.”

“How the hell did you link that journal to the shooting?” Cameron asked.

“I can’t comment on that,” Sonny said.

The skin crawled on the back of Cameron’s neck. “You had a witness.”

“Again, I can’t comment on the case,” Sonny said. “Will you help?”

“Absolutely,” Cameron said. “I’ll start making calls. When do you want us to come in?”

“You tell me when you can get them here. I’ll make the time,” Sonny said.

“Right. I’ll get back to you by this evening,” Cameron said.

“Thanks, and I’ll ask you not to mention this outside the family just yet.”

“Of course,” Cameron said.

The call ended. He picked up the posthole digger and headed for the house.

“Hey, honey, I have some calls I need to make,” Cameron said.

Rusty rocked back on her heels and petted the big dog lying beside her.

“Okay. Bring me something to drink when you come back, okay?”

“I’ll bring you something to drink first, and then I’ll make calls,” he said, and disappeared inside, coming back moments later with a cold bottle of water. “I opened it for you.”

She grinned. “Thank you, Daddy.”

The look that washed over his face stopped her heart.

“I will never take that gift for granted,” he said, and leaned over and kissed her. “Don’t stay out too long. It’s getting hot.”

Rusty took a quick drink and then glanced down at Ghost as the screen door banged behind Cameron.

“You better enjoy your peace and quiet while you have it, big boy. It’s going to get really noisy around here in a few months. Are you up for it?”

Ghost whined and licked her fingers.

She stroked the top of his head. “You are such a good boy. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

Two hours later, Cameron called Sonny back.

“Sonny, it’s Cameron. I’ve called all of the elders. We’ll be in tomorrow around 10:00 a.m.”

“Awesome,” Sonny said. “How many are coming?”

“All of them. You’ll need about twenty chairs.”

“Thanks for the heads-up. See you then,” Sonny said.

Aaron found out about the meeting when he went home to pack. Shirley was full of questions about the journal, none of which he could answer.

“Mom, you know I can’t talk about ongoing cases,” he said.

Sean walked in on the conversation.
