Dani grinned.

Aaron sighed. The dimples just made an appearance.

“So, what does the winner get?” Dani asked.

He couldn’t say what he really wanted, and said the first thing he thought of.

“Dibs on the shower before bedtime.”

“Deal,” Dani said. “And I warn you. I’m really good at this.”

“And I’m really good at spotting liars, so we’ll see which chef is all talk and which one has the chops.”

Dani laughed. “Chef. Chops. You’re really punny.”

He groaned. “You made me before it even began. I see a cold shower in my future.”

Dani smirked.

Aaron sighed. He could see a lot of cold showers in his future before this stakeout was over.

Hours later, they were getting ready for bed.

Dani won the bet and bounced down the hall to shower first, while Aaron began making his bed. The quilts she’d left out for him to spread under his sleeping bag were going to make for easy sleeping. Once he finished, he went through the house, turning out lights and checking the locks.

He was sitting cross-legged on the sleeping bag, reading messages on his phone, when Dani emerged. He glanced up.

“I saved you some hot water,” she said.

He was still trying to wrap his head around the thrust of her breasts beneath the oversized T-shirt she waswearing, and how toned and long her bare legs were, when she went into her bedroom and shut the door.

“Jesus,” he whispered, then went to shower.

He was wearing gym shorts when he came out, and noticed the door to her bedroom was wide open.

Dani was in bed. The lamp was on. And when she heard him come out of the bathroom, she looked up from the book she was reading.

Okay, he looks as good out of uniform as he does in it.

“Do you want me to close your door now?” he asked.

“No.”

“Are you afraid?” he asked.

“Yes, but not of you,” she said.

“That’s fair. I might snore.”

“That’s fine. As long as you are asleep, then I can assume all is well,” she said.

“Do you mind if I come in to check your window locks?” he asked.

“Not at all,” Dani said, and watched him cross the room to the windows.

“All good,” he said after checking the locks.

She laid her book aside and started to reach for the lamp.
