He closed his eyes and tried to concentrate on anything but how close she was.

“So, I guess Sean got all of your security installed,” he said.

“Yes. Oh! He also left something for you. It’s in that packet on the kitchen counter. He said to remind you to take your personal laptop when you leave.”

“What is all this?” he asked.

“Don’t know. He just said you’d know what to do with it.”

“Yeah, okay,” Aaron said, then let the conversation lapse because she smelled good, and the sound of herbreathing so close to his ear was somewhat erotic, a thing he needed not to act upon.

Once she was satisfied that she’d applied enough antiseptic, she began using butterfly strips to pull the gash back together. “Okay, that part’s done,” she said, and leaned back to look. “Are you required to wear a hat?”

“Pretty much,” he said.

She reached back into the first aid kit for a small gauze bandage and taped it across the cut. “That should protect the cut from the pressure of the hat. I think you’re good to go,” she said and took a step backward.

“How do I look?” he asked.

She frowned. “Are you fishing for a compliment?”

He grinned. “Maybe.”

“You look just dangerous enough to be interesting,” she said, and began gathering up the mess.

Aaron reached for her hand.

“I’ll take the interesting part, but don’t be afraid of me.”

Dani shivered. “I’m not. Not like that.”

“Okay then,” he said, and stood. “What’s thawing in that pan?”

Changing the subject was a good move. Dani’s panic quickly subsided.

“Pork chops.”

Aaron groaned. “My favorite food ever.”

“Would you rather have them fried or smothered in gravy?”

“Yes,” Aaron said, and then winked, picked up the laptop and the packet Sean left for him, and walked out laughing.

The sound of his laughter made Dani smile, and she was still smiling as she heard him drive away. As soon as she finished cleaning up the first aid mess, she went to the bathroom to see what needed to be cleaned, and found everything hung up and tucked away.

She sighed.

“Lord. He’s gorgeous. Funny. Kind to a fault. Picks up after himself. And today a hero. I can’t believe some damn fool woman gave him up.” Then she caught a glimpse of the look in her eyes. She was fooling herself and she knew it. “Or…maybe I should just thank her for the opportunity.”

As soon as Aaron got back to the precinct, he parked, called Yancy to come pick him up, then while he was waiting, opened the packet from Sean.

A small tracking device fell out in his hand, accompanied by a note.

If you know what the stalker dude is driving, plant it. I’ve already loaded the tracking app onto your home laptop. That way you can keep track of the bastard coming and going. And I put a tracking device on Dani’s car. If he starts following her, you’ll know it.You can tell which car is which by the color of the blip. Dani’s blip is white. His is black.

“Way to go, bro,” Aaron muttered, and dropped the tracking device into his pocket. He already knew the tag number and color of the vehicle. All he had to do was get lucky and see it parked somewhere in Jubilee long enough to plant the bug.

Nyles Fairchild was back in his old routine. What had happened felt like a bad dream. Sometimes he almost convinced himself it hadn’t really happened. But then night would come. The moment he closed his eyes, he lived the incident all over again. His conscience and guilt were killing him. What he hoped to put behind him had become the monster in the closet.
