“Good.” I smiled, feeling relieved as I settled back into my seat.

A deep growl erupted from Leo’s throat. I caught his gaze, and instantly it was all I could do not to rip his clothes off him and fuck him. I wanted to show him what he meant to me and how much I wanted him. How I could never let go.

Leo’s eyes darted to the back seat, to August. “Anyway,” August said, pulling me close and kissing my neck. “There are no neighbors on our safe house island.”

I rested my head on August’s shoulder and let the feeling of being safe wash over me. “I never thought we’d get out of there,” I whispered.

August squeezed my knee. “We’ll get through this. I’m just glad you didn’t have to go through with the marriage to Lord Nathan. He didn’t…hurt you, did he?”

Atticus looked at me through the rearview mirror, and Leo turned in his seat, his eyes boring into mine. “No,” I whispered. “He didn’t.”

“What happened?” August asked.

I gnawed on my lip. “Lord Nathan is providing Theodore DuPont with an army, but they are unskilled. They’re working together, but I don’t think that’s why your father wanted me to marry him, Atticus.”

“What are you thinking, Little Monster?”

August held me tighter. “He kept comparing me to Isabelle. Said I wasn’t good enough for you. Called me a wh-whore. He’s projecting all of his issues with August’s mother onto me.”

August lightened the tension with a shudder. “It’s so gross to think about our parents banging. Our families have always been friends, but I never thought…”

Atticus let out a sigh. “My father isn’t used to not getting what he wants. And it’s no surprise King Frederick wasn’t good to Isabelle. He doesn’t want me to pine after a woman who doesn’t want me back.”

“But I do want you!” I exclaimed. “I just want…all of you.”

August kissed my neck. “You have all of us, love.”

“Good. Because I’m not going anywhere. Can you understand that?”

August pushed his fingers into my hair and pulled my head back, kissing me with such intensity I was left breathless. “I’m going to show you how much I understand that.”

I let out a small laugh and rested my head on his chest. It was going to be a long ride to the coast.

The salty air permeated the vehicle, and Leo watched the passing world outside his window. Atticus drove while August snored in the back seat.

I closed my eyes and sighed, trying to rid myself of the weariness I felt. I was so tired and overwhelmed by everything. At least we’d have time to process it all at the safe house.

I opened my eyes and looked out the window, watching as the landscape slowly changed from open plains to a small town.

August had been asleep for the majority of the ride, and I was grateful for that; we had all been exhausted from the last few days.

“What have you been thinking about, Little Monster?” Atticus questioned me before taking the exit off of the highway.

“Too much,” I said under my breath. August shifted in his sleep and pulled me closer against him. “Is it wrong that I’m happy right now despite what happened?”

“Never,” Leo murmured quietly in agreement.

“We’re together, we’re safe—for now—and we have time,” I said softly.

August slowly woke with a yawn before saying, “Shit. I was supposed to finger fuck you through this entire car ride, and here I am sleeping.” His fingers tenderly ghosted over my thigh before settling there possessively as if to emphasize his point.

I pressed my lips to his forehead, watching as his eyelids fluttered closed. “You needed the rest. We all need it.”

Leo yawned and looked up at August. “Is this the right exit?” he murmured.

August leaned forward and squinted into the night. His sharp features softened as he smiled and pointed at an old road sign. “I think so. If we take a left here, it’ll take us to the bridge that leads to the house. It’s a long drive, though,” he finished in a low voice that sent shivers up my spine.

He turned his gaze back to me and winked before brushing his lips against mine and pressing them close to my ear. “I have you all to myself for at least the next hour, so I’m going to make sure you scream for me,” he whispered with a husky laugh.
