“No?” he asked mockingly, his lips curling into a sinister smile.

I frantically shook my head.

“Ah, Isabelle. Together, we shall rule the world.” He reached for me and I screamed in fear.

“No! No! No!” I yelled, shaking violently. “Stop it! Stop it!”

He grabbed my dress and I thrashed in his grip. “A DuPont is to rule over his subjects.”

I struggled to break free as his grip tightened. “You’re wrong! I don’t care about power! I don’t want it! I don’t want it! I don’t want it!”

“You will learn to crave it.”

He brought his face closer to me, and I squirmed, kicking and wiggling with all my might. “You will learn to consume it.”

I felt his hand brush my bare side. “Or I will consume you first,” he whispered.

I was breathing hard, my nostrils flaring, as I stopped fighting him.

He dragged me across the room, kicking and screaming at the same time.

“Please, stop!”

I knew I was capable of fighting him back, but I just couldn’t. I couldn’t force myself to be strong. I couldn’t bring myself to fight. Not with the grief terrorizing my system. Not with the memories assaulting my brain.

He grabbed me by the delicate skin of my arm, digging his fingers into my flesh. I yelped in pain, my eyes watering from the sharp sting. “I’ll take your power and I’ll take your strength,” he said in a low, hissing tone. “I’ll take your baby and I’ll take your life.” He stared at my stomach. “I will destroy you, Isabelle. You’ll finally be mine.”

“I’m not Isabelle,” I sobbed. “I’m Christine.”

I felt my body go numb as his words from before seemed to echo in the air between us. He stared at me with a twisted sense of glee in his eyes. His grip on my arm tightened, cutting off my circulation and causing pain to course through me.

My heart hammered against my chest as I tried to break free from his grasp, but it was no use. He was too strong for me. I whimpered in terror, feeling all the energy being sucked out of me.

He continued to look at me crazily as he spoke again, “I can tame you. I can fix everything.” His voice was low and menacing, and I knew that whatever he said, he meant it.

In a desperate attempt to escape, I thrashed around, but he simply tightened it once more. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I looked up into his face in horror. “No,” I whimpered softly.

He gave a low growl before continuing, “Careful, Isabelle. We don’t want to hurt the baby.” He paused before looking down at my stomach with an eerie gleam in his eye. “Elizabeth will be thrilled. We can start over,” he said with a sneer on his lips. “This was the way it was always meant to be.”

A chill ran through me as I shook my head frantically. “NO! I’m not Isabelle!” My voice had been reduced to a whisper, but the desperation behind it was evident.

“Yes, you are,” he replied calmly, his voice filled with malice that made my skin crawl. He took a step back to look at me from head to toe before continuing, “You have always been Isabelle.”

His words left me stunned and horrified beyond belief as they slowly sank into my mind like burning hot embers into flesh. How could this be happening? How could this be real? Nothing mattered anymore except for the sheer terror.

“Get some rest,” he spat before releasing me. “We have a coronation and a wedding tomorrow.”

“Both?” I choked out.

“I’m tired of waiting. You will submit, Isabelle!”

I held my hands up in surrender. “Okay,” I choked out. “Okay.”

He stood up and straightened his clothes, eyeing me with that dark gaze that made me sick to my stomach.
