A young Asian woman came in, followed closely by a fey. Molev turned to nod at the man.

“Tor,” he said.

“Molev.” The big fey grinned and set his hands on the woman’s shoulders. “This is my June.”

“Hi, June,” I said, standing. “I’m Andie.”

“Hello. Heard you were looking for us,” she said, glancing at Matt.

“I am. Andie just provided us with the means to communicate with the outside world–if there’s anything left of it.”

“What do you mean?” she said.

“That barrier message was as bad as we thought,” he said.

“A wave of infected will be heading our way soon,” Molev said, looking at Tor. “We need to prepare.”

Tor’s easygoing stance hardened as he nodded.

“How big of a wave?” June asked.

“Probably hundreds of thousands,” I said. “And all at once. We saw a hound gathering the infected together and using them to coordinate an attack.”

“And I saw an infected hiding a hound and using livestock as bait in an attempt to draw us out,” June said, reaching back for Tor. “They’re getting a lot smarter. How can we prepare for hundreds of thousands?”

“Higher walls?” Matt suggested.

“That won’t keep them out forever,” June said. “Not with those numbers.”

“We don’t need to keep them out forever. We just need to buy the researchers enough time to find the miracle we need,” I said. “And higher walls could help with that.”

Matt and June shared a look.

“It’s not going to be easy,” June said. “We humans were next to useless when it came to helping lift cars into place. And that was with Unity’s main wall, which was on the ground. A third layer’s going to be impossible for us.”

“My brothers and I will add onto the walls,” Molev said.

“We’ll provide whatever help we can,” Matt said.

“I have a roster of who’s living where,” June said. “I’ll use that to get a new shift schedule together and send it over to Mya and Drav. Unless the two of you want it.”

“Since we’re not sure what you’re talking about, stick with Mya and Drav.”

“We’ll create a work schedule for the walls in all three places,” she said. “Even though another layer will require more fey power than human, there are still ways for us to help. So I’ll ensure we have the right number of humans and fey in eight-hour shifts. This way everyone, including the fey, gets a break.”

“We understand,” Molev said. “Divide my brothers and me equally between all three locations, but add an extra shift for us each day. We will need to gather the materials we need for building as well.”

“Mya’s not going to like putting that much of the workload on you,” June said. “But I’ll assign groups to go out for cars with a fey escort. If I assign ninety per location, that leaves thirty-four fey who could assist with gathering supplies.”

I glanced at him. “Three hundred and two fey? Why did you ask for five hundred females, then?”

“Your people love to give less than they promise.”

“You continue to impress me,” I said, shaking my head slightly while doing my best to hide my concern. They had almost half the numbers I’d believed. Just over three hundred fey to hold off hundreds of thousands of infected? How could we hope to survive?

Molev was watching me too closely again, so I stood. “We’ll leave you to the scheduling then. Send whatever you come up with to Drav and Mya. Molev and I will stay focused on helping the researchers.”

“If you require anything, send word,” Molev said, taking my hand.
