He smoothed his hands over my wet shoulders, a caress and a massage that had me leaning into him.

“Although, staying with you all day wouldn’t be the worst thing.”

He chuckled and leaned in to kiss my forehead. “I hope to experience that soon.”

“Because we’re trapped inside, surrounded by infected, or because we figure out how to stop them?”

He grunted and pulled me into his arms.

“This is the opposite of reassuring,” I said. “Tell me what your gut is telling you.”

He was quiet for a long moment.

“That it’s not safe for you here. That if I want to protect you, we need to leave. But it won’t be safe for you then, either.”

“Well, that doesn’t sound promising.”

“No, it does not,” he agreed.

“Any idea where your instincts are telling you to go?”

“Home.”

I sighed, understanding that he meant his caves.

“It makes sense. You said you lived there for several lifetimes. You’d obviously found a way to keep the hounds at bay.”

“Yes. They avoided the light from the crystals.”

I pulled back to stare at him.

“The crystals are their kryptonite? Then we go there and grab the crystals.”

He shook his head and held up his wrist so I could look at the crystal tied there.

“Their light fades after a few days on the surface.”

I understood what that meant. We couldn’t move the crystals. We could only use them where they were. Which meant living underground…forever. But was that really any different than my thoughts of a bunker the night before? Only, they’d been able to survive down there without starving for thousands of years. If they could do that, then we could do that too.

“Okay,” I said. “Then we start plans to evacuate everyone and move them to your old home. How long will that take?”

He slowly shook his head. “Not everyone.”

“Why not? Do you think we can’t all make it?”

He frowned and stared at the water running down the wall for a moment.

“I have no answer. I only know we will all die if we all leave. If some leave, we have a chance to save everyone. And you need to be with me.”

“You need to work on your gut premonitions,” I said, patting his chiseled abs. “They’re a little too vague yet for my tastes.”

He grunted and began washing me. I let him do his thing, knowing it was soothing him just as much as it soothed me. When he finished, he turned off the water and took some time to dry me.

I stroked a finger over the crease in his brow.

“Don’t worry. We’ll figure out what we need to do together. If your instincts are saying we have a chance, then I’m not worried. There’s hope. Okay?”

He grunted and kissed me gently before letting me tug the towel from his hands.
