“You haven’t figured out their single-minded focus yet?”

“Yeah, they want the white-picket-fence package.”

“Ha! Nope. That’s too nice. They want a woman they can adore, who will adore them in return, and lots and lots of sex. All the sex. All the time. That takes up about ninety percent of their thought process during the day.” She smirked at me. “I can see you doubt it. That means Molev did a pretty good job playing it cool with you.

“When I first met Drav, he didn’t know what to make of me. Once he figured out what my fun zone was for though, it changed their world. And I saytheirand nothisbecause they share everything. Hope you weren’t attached to any form of privacy.”

“Not really,” I said. “Molev already let me know that they can hear everything even through the walls.”

Mya nodded. “They were sex-obsessed when they thought it was just a good time. Now that they know we can make babies?” She shook her head. “That’s all they think about. Not how hard it will be to keep them alive.”

“I don’t think all this napping is helping you,” I said, hearing how the conversation had wrapped back around to her fears. “Sleep is just another way to hide from the truth. Use your energy to change what you can to build the future you want. It might not be perfect, but at least you did something, right?”

“Do you really think I’m doing nothing?”

“No. But I think you need a break from the mediating, babysitting, and decision-making. Do something with your hands for a while.”

“Tried that. My baking is average. My sewing subpar. And because I’m pregnant, they don’t want me climbing the walls.”

“That’s stupid. If the infected get in here, are you going to levitate to safety?”

Mya grinned at me. “You’re a lot like Hannah. You pull back just enough to be nice, though.”

The door opened, and Drav walked in followed by Molev. I hadn’t been expecting to see him yet. It had only been a few hours since he said he was going to help bring people to Unity.

His gaze locked on me, and I could see the warning in them.

“I’m not sure what that look’s for,” I said. “I’m not the one who interrupted your workday. Did Drav catch you up on why I interrupted Mya’s nap?”

“Yes. You think the crystal needs to be destroyed.”

“I know you thought that it might be the key to Mya’s immunity, but the fact that the other women are immune should be enough proof that it’s not, right? And you said something is telling you to go home. I think this is why.”

He continued to frown at me.

“I can’t read minds, Molev. Body language, yes, which is how I know you’re upset, but not minds. So just tell me what’s upsetting you. We don’t have time to waste playing guessing games.”

He closed the distance between us and grabbed the back of my head.

“You’re retreating again.”

That was the last thing I’d expected him to say.

“How did I retreat?” He hadn’t really expected me to run into his arms the moment he walked through the door, had he? Although, come to think of it, I showed him lots of affection in the bedroom but tended to forget outside the bedroom. I blamed circumstances on that though, not me.

“Just now I heard the cold, detached Andie telling Mya to stop hiding from the truth. To risk more of herself instead of staying where she and the baby are safe. Not every female hates the idea of having children.”

He had me questioning if I’d been detached until he said that last part. I closed my mouth, which had been preparing an apology for Mya, and stared at the man who I had mistakenly begun to believe understood me better than anyone else.

A bitter smile pulled at my mouth.

“And there it is,” I said, hating that he’d waited until now to admit how much he resented my stance on kids. “You could have saved us both time and energy by acknowledging how you really felt from the start. And, for the record, I’ve never pretended to be anything I’m not, Molev. Saying what I think isn’t retreating; it’s just speaking my mind.” I pushed away his hand. “And so you don’t confuse this again, this isn’t me retreating either. This is me leaving.”

I made it two steps toward the door before I was flipped over his shoulder. I didn’t fight it; I seethed and waited for him to jog to our house.

Once we were inside, he stripped my jacket from me and hauled me to the bedroom. His beautiful eyes were filled with an angry fire as if he was somehow the wronged party.

He grabbed my chin and tried kissing me. Well, he didn’t try to kiss me. He did kiss me. What he tried to do was get me to kiss back. To fight him. To give him anything to go off of.
