Molev looked even more troubled by the news but nodded to Brog and Ben.

Brog went to Roni. “It is more than one hundred feet. You are strong enough to climb it, but you may want to conserve your strength for whatever comes next.”

“What are you saying? That you’re going to carry me down?”

He turned his back to her and got down on one knee.

“Hold on,” he said over his shoulder.

She grinned like a crazy person, adjusted her firearms, and climbed onto his back.

“Not exactly the way I wanted to ride you, but I’ll take it,” she said before licking the edge of his ear.

Ben was kneeling in front of Katie a second later.

She gave me a helpless look then resolutely climbed on. His expression was pure joy as he straightened.

“I like the way your breasts feel against my back when you hold me tightly,” he said.

She flung herself backward, but he counterbalanced with his hold on her legs, and she hit his back with a thump.

“Are you all right?” he asked. “I swear I will not let go.”

She gave me a desperate look.

“Stay focused,” I said. “One hundred feet to the bottom.” I looked at the fey. “Less talking.”

He nodded and headed for the rope as Brog swung himself and Roni over the side.

I looked at Molev. He waved another fey forward and kissed my forehead before telling me to go with the other guy.

“I will follow you.”

The bottom of the cavern would have been pitch black if not for Roni’s penlight. We waited as the fey brought down the guys next. Molev descended last. Watching him hand over hand that rope did things to my insides and made me regret a night of just holding each other.

One of the fey led the way. Molev walked beside me, keeping a steady hand on my back as I carefully placed each step on the uneven path. No matter how many times Roni shone her light forward, there was no end to the sloping tunnel. The air warmed by degrees until I started to sweat. I saw Steve wipe his forehead and knew I wasn’t the only one feeling the change.

The slope bottomed out, and the lead fey disappeared between one step and the next.

“Uh…” Roni stopped walking and aimed her penlight at where he’d been.

“It is the magic of the caverns,” Molev said from behind me. “It is safe.”

Another fey walked through, disappearing for a few seconds before only his head reappeared. He flashed a smile at Roni then retreated.

“Scaredy cat,” Steve murmured as he passed Roni.

Brog caught her by the back of the collar before she could bolt forward.

They walked through together, followed by Katie and Ben.

Crossing through whatever it was felt like a small electrical charge running under my skin, and my ears popped painfully. But the view on the other side had me ignoring the discomfort.

The cavern we stood in was huge, stretching farther than I could see. Soft blue and green light illuminated the rock formations rising up from the cavern floor, courtesy of some kind of algae-type plant that dangled from the ceiling. Underneath the strings to our right, a still pool of water reflected the beautiful glow.

“Is that the pool where Mya almost died?” Roni asked.

“Yes.” Brog reeled her closer to his side.
