“Won’t that tax the resources here?” I asked.
“What better reason to get them to their final destination as quickly as possible?” she asked.
Although she’d met our initial request with shock, she seemed to be rolling with the idea pretty well now.
“Thank you,” I said.
“Let’s just hope we have a vaccine before the housing situation becomes overcrowded,” she said. “Your volunteers will be at the field shortly after sunrise. Good luck.”
We accepted a ride home, which I appreciated, and updated the rest of the team on the plans. Molev was quieter than usual, standing with his arms crossed as he listened to me explain everything. When I finished, he held out his hand to me.
I hesitated, and I felt no shame for it. My bits still felt too big to fit between my legs and would probably fall off if he even looked at them wrong.
Roni snorted and nudged me.
“Don’t be a baby. Go set some boundaries.”
I shook my head at her and took his hand. As soon as the bedroom door closed, he released me and sat on the bed.
“Did I hurt you?” he asked.
“No. Everything was fine. I’m just a little tender now.”
He grunted and looked down at his hands. “Is that why you discouraged Roni?”
I tried to think back but couldn’t come up with anything.
“I’m not sure how I discouraged Roni,” I said.
“You told her to stop thinking about sex. You asked what she would do with a possessive man and if she was really ready to settle down.
“My brothers and I are fighting against hounds and the infected. But we also have to fight the fear and prejudice humans have. We are never not fighting, Andie.
“To have one person…a female waiting to welcome us without reservation… Why is that so horrible to want? Are you not also waiting for that one person who will accept you just as you are? Very few females will even look at us without cringing. Roni, Katie, and you? You are rare, Andie. Not many will be like you.
“Waurlyn is correct that I have a long road ahead of me. It will not be easy to find even half the volunteers I asked for. Don’t rob me of the ones I already have.”
His words fanned the emotions he was so insistently waking in me. I walked over to him and framed his face with my hands so I could get him to look at me.
“Roni isn’t some timid little Miss. She flashed you, Molev. She propositioned you more times than I could count. Whether she’s ready to settle down or not, she’ll be very interested in your brothers. My warning wasn’t to discourage her but to protect some poor, unsuspecting fey from getting his heart broken by her. Unless she’s crazy in love with him, there’s every chance she’ll sleep with him and leave. I don’t think that’s the kind of example you want to set starting out with the volunteers, is it?”
“No.”
“Okay, then.”
His hands gripped my waist, and no matter how tender I was or how much that sudden heat in his gaze sparked my interest, I couldn’t take any more of Molev. At least, not that day.
“We need to set some boundaries,” I said.
“I know. I heard.”
“Yeah, we’ll get to the sex ones. First, we need to talk about couple privacy. Roni doesn’t need to know about our sex life.”
“She does. She cannot guide me if she doesn’t know what happened.”
“Guide you? How?”
“She explained why you pushed me away. That I needed to give you time to recover.”
