“What’s going on?”

“Andie will explain tonight,” Molev said, picking me up. “Continue training.”

Then he was running with me. He went straight to the house next door.

“Molev, we don’t have time for this,” I said, batting away his hand when he reached for my shirt. “We need to—”

The hand on the back of my head held me in place for his aggressive kiss. I immediately stopped resisting. It served no purpose. Molev would have whatever he wanted, one way or another. And right now, he wanted me as willing and as desperate as he was.

I was too sore, though.

Or so I thought.

Once I gave in, he gentled and did all the right things to rekindle that hunger I had for him. Just the right amounts of aggression balanced with hot, tender looks and feathering kisses.

And when I lay panting beneath him, he eased into me with controlled caution, watching for any hint of discomfort. I felt a little, but nothing that lasted with his thumb stroking my throat.

“You are mine, Andie,” he said. “Protect yourself when I’m gone. If anything happens to you, I will not hold back. Do you understand?”

I nodded and clung to him as his rhythm intensified.

“Mine,” he said again as I peaked, and he joined me.

He didn’t let up until it was almost dusk, and I once again doubted my legs would be able to support me. I listened to him move around the room as I lay on the bed, waiting for my pulse to die down. A damp cloth gently swiped between my legs.

“One day, I will be able to take my time with you,” he said.

“That’s not a day I’m looking forward to,” I said. “I like being able to walk afterward.”

He chuckled and tenderly kissed my knee.

“You will be fine. Come. Stand. We don’t have much time left.”

I took the cloth from him and finished cleaning myself once I was on my wobbly legs. He had me dressed and in his arms again in short order.

Sid opened the door to our house for us when we approached. Spread out between the kitchen and the living room, the rest of the team waited.

“What’s going on?” Roni asked. “Why are you leaving?”

“To keep the peace here, I will leave to clear the infected from the barrier and secure more supplies. Continue evaluating the volunteers. Waurlyn knows Irwin won’t be safe forever and will start sending the people you select to join me. Take care of each other. Take care of Andie.” He paused and pressed his forehead to mine. “Remember what I said.”

Outside, an engine rumbled.

“Train hard,” he said. “We will see each other again soon.”

Then I was on my own feet, staring at an empty doorway. Outside, the engine rumbled again.

“We’re going to need a lot more explanation than that,” Sid said

“And I have one, but I need a shower first.”

“Go,” Roni said. “Food will be ready when you’re done.”

It was a quick shower but a long dinner with a lot of conversation. Everyone was on board with the new plan and nervous about Molev’s intuition that things were going to go downhill fast outside the barrier.

We went to bed early, and Katie had to shake my shoulder to get me out of bed the next morning. Once again, it hurt to move, but I powered through it.

The next day was easier. So was the following one.
