“What’s going on?” she asked.

“The infected are changing. They are growing smarter. The number of humans living at that border base were attracting the attention of the infected in the beginning until they realized I was there.”

“Were you leaving body piles?” Sid asked.

“No. I moved all the undead away from the base. The infected still understood I was there and avoided the area. I scouted farther to the north and found them accumulating in larger numbers. I shared this information with the base commander, and he shared it with his people.”

“Does Waurlyn know?” Roni asked.

“I don’t think so,” I said. “She didn’t mention anything to me, and she’s been open about everything else.”

“Based on what she said earlier, I believe she knows and is prioritizing,” Molev said. “Supplies are necessary as is a vaccine. Whether or not the infected attack the barrier, neither of those priorities change.”

I thought of what Waurlyn had said to Molev and nodded.

“She understands what’s at Whiteman—a potential cure,” I said. “Between the serum and the infected gathering, it’s enough of a reason to move up the timeline and send you home.”

Molev grunted.

“This base is hard to access without air transport,” I said. “It’s why Waurlyn and I picked it. We should be fine here while we wait for the rest of our people to join us.”

“How long will that take?” Roland asked.

“Waurlyn didn’t share that part with me,” I said. “Just that she was going to reallocate resources to help Molev obtain supplies. I don’t know what she told Rick, but I’m guessing he’s going to expect you to want to go somewhere and scout soon.”

“Do you have a map?” Molev asked.

“No, but I’m betting Rick does.”

Molev stared at me for a long moment. “This is not the reunion I hoped for.”

Roni chuckled. “We’ll give you some alone time later,” she said. “Let’s figure out how far we need to escort our ragtag group once they all get here and what kind of transportation we’ll have.”

We left our assigned bunkhouse and asked the nearest soldier for directions to the Commander. When we found him, he was in the middle of facilitating the relocation of the researchers' cargo container. The doctor noticed our approach first.

“Molev, if you have a moment, could I collect a few samples? I have some tests I’d like to run as soon as—”

“No more injections,” Molev said. “Not out here.”

She nodded quickly. “Of course. I hope you understand the team and I were aware the research hasn’t progressed to the point where we are ready for trials. Each one was done under orders and duress. There’s still so much more we don’t know about your genetic makeup, which is why I’d like the samples.”

He glanced at me.

“I think it’ll be fine as long as they don’t inject anyone.”

He motioned for her to go ahead and looked at Rick.

“Do you have a map that I can look at? I would like to familiarize myself with the locations Waurlyn has provided.”

Molev was really good at saying just enough without giving anything away.

“I’ll take you to my little slice of map heaven as soon as the good doctor is done sticking you,” Rick said with a smile.

It didn’t take her long to finish up.

“I’m going to hang out with the research team and keep an eye on things,” Katie said.

“I’ll tag along with her,” Brandon said.
