He gave me a chaste kiss that morphed and evolved into a heart-pounding need within minutes. I grabbed his shoulders, forgetting about the water bottle I held. It fell to the floor with a crash, and I jerked away from him. Panting, I slowly shook my head.

“See? This is why we need to wait. We get too caught up. It’s dangerous. Maybe not for you, but it definitely is for me.”

He cupped the back of my head and rested his forehead against mine.

When he didn’t say anything, I began to get nervous.

“Are you okay?” I asked softly.

“I am tired of the games and wish we were already home.”

I pulled back enough to look him in the eyes.

“You think I’m playing games with you?”

“The games I’ve played to meet you, to find more people like you, to get those people here.” He gently smoothed back my hair, his gaze gaining intensity instead of softening. “I’m tired, Andie.”

Understanding, I wrapped my arms around his waist and hugged him close.

“It hasn’t been easy. But don’t give up now.”

His hold on me tightened.

“With you by my side, I will never give up.”

I smiled and pressed a kiss to his T-shirt-covered pec. Then I nipped his clearly defined nipple. He jerked in my arms, and I grinned as I looked up at him.

“That’s so you know this isn’t me retreating and a promise that your patience will be rewarded later.”

He growled, the sound vibrating from his chest through mine.

“Focus,” I said, patting his chest. “We need to brainstorm how we’re getting these people out of here, not how to get me out of my pants.”

“Removing your pants would be much faster and easier.”

“No doubt about that,” I said, trying to ignore the throb his hungry look was creating. “Did you check the family housing outside the fence?”

“Not yet.”

“I think I remember one of the soldiers mentioning a school and a hotel on base too. I’m sure everything outside the fence was already cleaned out by base personnel, but it doesn’t hurt to check. While you’re looking, keep checking the tanks of any vehicles you pass. If the raiders left a stash of food in the closet, that means there had to be a reason for them to want to come back here.”

He grunted, kissed my forehead, and started for the door.

“Lock it behind me.”

I hurried to do as he said then returned to the radio with my water.

The light outside the window began to fade before Molev knocked on the door again.

This time, he wasn’t alone. I wrote down the message for my replacement and handed it over along with the notes about what channels I’d already tried.

“He said to broadcast it for the next twenty-four hours,” I said. “As long as we’re here, we might as well keep repeating it.”

The woman nodded and sat down in the chair. I gave her the hand radio with a warning to watch the battery and call before it ran out.

Molev carried me back to the housing where I ate a cold MRE while sitting on the floor in a free corner of the room where Roni, Katie, Sid, and Roland were already sleeping.

“Did you find anything?” I asked Molev quietly.
