“Fey or human, we can only run on fumes for so long. You’re going to need to sleep soon, or when we need you the most, you’re going to fail.”

He opened his eyes with his forehead still pressed against mine. This close, that danger warning in my head went crazy, and my pulse stumbled.

“I will never fail you, Andie.”

Why did he have to say things that made me want to climb him like a pole at a strip club?

“Do you want to leave right away, or do you want to find a bed with me and snuggle for a bit?” I asked against my better judgment because I knew where snuggling would lead.

I knew he understood what I was saying when he used his hold on my hair to tip my head back and kiss me hungrily.

“You tempt me, Andie,” he said when his lips lifted from mine. “But a bit of you will not be enough. I want all of you for hours.”

And I wanted him the same. But I didn’t say it. Instead, I nodded and focused on calming my rapid pulse.

“Go then. Find the fuel we need to get out of here.”

He kissed me hungrily again then disappeared.

I quietly made my way back to the housing and paused to talk to the soldier by the door.

“Molev left to scout Enid for fuel. When was the last change over?”

“Ten minutes ago,” he said.

“I want more eyes on the roofs while he’s gone. One trained with one untrained. I’ll be back with your new watch buddy. Teach her everything you can.”

Over the next hour, I slowly emptied the housing of people, giving everyone a task. While I hoped Molev would find exactly what we needed, I knew we also needed to prepare for a longer stay, just in case. So I sent out two teams to search the buildings within the interior fence for anything useful. Roni’s team found a cache of clean clothes in the laundry. She’d wisely picked out stuff that would fit Molev and left it in the bathroom of the housing for his return.

Other than that, they found a bit more food left behind here and there. Nothing major.

I assigned another group to take inventory of what we had and estimate how long the supplies would last us. The answer wasn’t good.

“We need to look outside the fence,” Roland said. “Roni and I will head up the teams.”

“We know the infected like to hide. Only take people you trust to have your back.”

They nodded and left to gather their teams.

Exhaustion pulled at me, and I looked at my watch. Almost midday. Just a little longer. I went to the entrance of the housing and waited there along with the two guards.

Molev appeared almost thirty minutes later. Gore spattered his shirt and face.

“I found several of the gas stations. They all had fuel in their underground tanks.”

“Looks like you found a few infected too. How hard is it going to be to get the fueler to the gas stations?”

“Not difficult. The roads are undamaged, and there are ways around the vehicles left behind.”

“There are some clean clothes waiting for you in the bathroom. Why don’t you shower while we talk?”

I followed him into the barracks, and he didn’t even hesitate to strip down in front of me once we were alone in the bathroom. The state of his hard length drew my attention, and if not for the ick he needed to wash away, I would have reached for him.

Instead, I motioned for him to get into the shower. “How many infected did you run into?”

“A few larger groups,” he said. “But I drew them to me on purpose to see how many were still there.”

“Do you think you got them all?”
