She gestured around us. “Look at where we are. It’ll be fine.”

So I talked, and we patrolled. She asked the occasional question but, for the most part, just listened. And by the time I was done spilling everything, I felt lighter. Especially when she paused and pulled me into her arms to hug me.

“I hope you let go of all the past hurt and bad examples and let yourself love him, Andie. You deserve to love and be loved in return. And he seems worth the risk.”

She released me and held my hand.

“You aren’t your parents. You aren’t the type to scream at someone or throw things at them, and neither is he. You know that, right?”

CHAPTERELEVEN

I staredat her for a long moment before nodding. She smiled at me and indicated the housing.

“Ready to go back?” she asked.

I found Molev passed out in a twin bed. I could have wedged myself against him. Instead, I sat on the floor and watched him sleep for a while and thought about what Rachel said. My parents had been a shit example of a relationship. But I’d also had so many good examples in my life. My brother and sister-in-law were amazing together. The fear of ending up like my parents, though, made me hesitate every damn time.

Did I love Molev?

I stared at him, trying to find the courage to admit the answer to myself.

My back started to hurt, and my ass went numb long before he opened his eyes and looked at me.

“Come here,” he said.

I shook my head and smiled slightly.

“The way we’re both feeling, we’ll probably lose what’s left of the day in selfish gratification instead of doing what we need to do to ensure the safety of everyone here.”

He grunted and sat up.

“Did you get enough sleep?” I asked, looking at my watch. It’d only been about two hours.

“Enough for now,” he said.

He stood and pulled me to my feet.

“Are you angry that your sister-in-law saw us kissing?”

“No. I was maybe a little embarrassed, but that’s gone now too. Just…let’s not do that again in the future, okay? It’ll make the women here more nervous to meet your brothers.”

Molev grunted and hugged me close.

“I know you drive well, but I want you to stay here when I leave. I will take Brandon with me.”

“Isn’t the safest place for me to be with you?” I asked.

“It is, but we lead together. You are my voice when I am away.”

I tipped my head to look up at him.

“Then go. I’m going to leave Roni in charge and get a few hours of sleep myself. Hurry back.”

“I’ll tell Roni. Rest.”

He tucked me into the bed, and I closed my eyes.

The next time I opened them, Rachel was shaking my shoulder, and a vivid orange light painted the opposite wall.
