He grunted and, without any further argument, started toward the housing. I trailed behind, looking at his arms and the bits of glove still clinging to a few places. Some of them had fallen off. Mostly from the wounds that had opened up again.

“You shower,” I said when I was inside. “I’m going to get the doctor. Stay put until I’m back.”

The doctor looked up from what she was working on in her room when I entered.

“He’s back and showering. Can you look at him again?”

“Of course.”

She grabbed her kit and followed me to our room. I left her there to wait while I went to get Molev. He was just shutting off the water when I entered.

“How are you feeling?” I asked.

“Nothing hurts more than anything else.”

He stepped out, unabashedly giving me a view. For the first time ever, he wasn’t even half-mast in my presence.

“Are you tired?” I asked.

He hesitated a moment. “Yes. Why are you asking?”

I shrugged lightly. “Maybe I just wanted an honest answer from you like you always pry out of me.”

His lips curved slightly, and he took a towel from the shelf. I stole it from him and started gently drying him off.

“The doctor is waiting in our room. I want her to check you over before you go to bed, okay?”

He grunted and let me wrap the towel around his waist when I was done.

While the doctor checked his wounds and removed any lingering bits of glove, I found him the promised can of Spam and another MRE. The doctor was taking a blood sample when I entered.

“Don’t you think he needs every bit he has?” I asked.

“That’s why I’m taking it,” she said. “I need to check his counts and compare them to the numbers we have. If it’s low, then I’m going to want to check again later to ensure it’s going up.” She removed the syringe and met Molev’s gaze. “Seeing the severity of your wounds last night and the amount of blood you lost concerns me. There’s so much we still don’t know about you. I can close your wounds, but I have no idea how else I can help you.” She set her hand on his forearm. “Everyone has a tipping point, Molev. We can’t afford for you to reach yours out here where we’re dependent on you alone. Take care of yourself until we fully understand how to take care of you as well.”

She gave him a final arm pat and left with all her things.

I closed the door behind her. “Did she do more than take your blood?”

“She closed a few of the wounds again and said the others looked like they were healing well.”

“Good.” I handed him his Spam and opened the MRE.

He ate quickly then lay down.

“I want you to sleep six hours,” I said. “If you’re still sleeping, then I’ll wake you up in the best way possible.”

“What is that?” he asked, not moving as I covered him with a blanket.

“With my mouth on the part of you that really likes to be kissed.”

The blanket over his hips jumped.

“Yep,” I said, lightly patting his chest. “That’s the part. Now get some sleep.”

A woman was leaning against the wall when I left and shut the door behind me.

“I’ll keep everyone quiet,” she said.
