“Do you see now how wanting a baby and having one are two different things?” I asked.

He frowned at me and looked at the baby, then Angel.

“I have complete faith that you won’t drop her,” she said. “Go ahead. Walk.”

He took one tentative step then another, making his way around the table in the dining area.

“See?” she said, looking at Shax. “Nothing to it, babe. Have Mya and Andie help you next so we don’t have to have someone spend the night again.”

Shax grunted, acknowledging her, but not looking away from the baby and Molev.

“So you’ve seen someone else like snack cake there?” Mya asked, drawing my attention.

I glanced at her and wondered how much to say in front of everyone.

“Yeah. At Fort Irwin. Sarah was a volunteer in the trials,” I said, keeping it vague.

When I didn’t say more, Mya nodded. “So now that you’ve seen the baby, what conclusion have you drawn?”

More than I wanted to think about, truthfully, but I focused on the conclusion she had likely hoped I would draw and the reason behind this field trip.

“Molev mentioned that you have grey spots. How many other women have them?” I asked.

“Every single woman who’s been sleeping with a fey more than a few weeks,” Mya said. “Eden, the other woman who was bitten, has them as well. At first, I thought my spots were due to the time I spent in their caves. But once I started getting sick again up here and saw more spots, I started to wonder if it was the same sickness coming back or something else. Then, when I found out I was pregnant, I thought the spots were because of that. Now, I think it has nothing to do with pregnancy and everything to do with unprotected sex with Drav.”

“That does seem the most likely explanation. I think the researchers will learn more if they can take samples from everyone,” I said.

Mya started to frown.

“I’ve watched the doctor take several samples from Molev,” I said. “She took a little more than normal because of his size, but she was careful to monitor his counts too. She isn’t some mad scientist who’s going to strap people down. Sheissuper driven to find a cure, but not at the cost of someone else’s life.”

“So you want to tell her everything?” Mya asked.

I glanced at Molev, who was still pacing with the baby. Only now, he was watching me.

“I see no reason not to at this point. Those researchers are the only means we have to find a way to end this for good. All of this…” I gestured to the house and the baby. “It’s just a lie you’re telling yourselves so you don’t have to acknowledge the truth.”

“And what’s the truth?” Mya asked, maintaining her calm just like me.

“That we’re already outnumbered and living on borrowed time.

“I’ve seen Molev kill hundreds of infected. He can easily wipe out a group of twenty before they reach me. But what happens when it’s him trying to protect me from one thousand at one time? Because those are the numbers that we’re going to be facing. No matter how strong the fey are or how fast they are, wewillbe overwhelmed. And that’s just dealing with the infected.”

Everyone in the room was watching me now.

“So the doctor and her researchers aren’t just looking for a cure then,” Mya said. “They’re looking for a way to stop the infected and the hounds.”

“That’s what we need them to find,” I said. “Without that, I don’t see how we have any hope.”

Mya glanced at Drav, the baby, then at Angel.

“Sorry for the heavy conversation,” Mya said.

“Don’t worry about it,” Angel said. “It’s the world we live in. I’d rather have the truth than hide from it. Where are the researchers now?”

“They are speaking with Kerr and Cassie at Eitri’s,” Drav said. “Eitri has a large, empty basement the researchers can use to set up their equipment.”

“Well, if they’re willing to make a house call,” Angel said, “I’m willing to let them take a sample from me and a really tiny one from Daisy.”
