His hand closed over my forearm with bruising force before I managed a step.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

“How many hits to the head do you think you can take?”I asked.

“Are you threatening me?”

“No, I’m actually trying to help you, but you’re too blind to see that.”

“And you’ve sold yourself to the enemy. For what? The promise of a cure that doesn’t even exist yet? You’re a traitor to your own people.”

I shook my head slowly in disbelief.

“A traitor?I risked my life to find him.And did the same to bring him back. The only promise Molev ever gave me was that, if I was honest with him, he would come here and do whatever he could to help create a cure.He kept his word. But it’s too far-fetched for you to believe that he’s helping simply for the sake of helping because most humans don’t do that.Oh, they say they do, but they don’t.They help when there’s something in it for them. When it’s convenient. But here’s a news flash. He’s not human.Stop holding him to human standards.Just because humans can’t keep their word doesn’t mean that his kind are the same way.Now let go of me before he comes back in here and tries knocking some sense into you again.”

I jerked my arm free.the general stood quickly to grab me again and stumbled a step.A second later, he was vomiting on the table.

“Oh, and Tom, let whomever you report to know that Molev is no longer interested in negotiating with you.If there’s a woman in charge, he’ll talk to her.He finds that women are inherently less confrontational and more open to listening.”

I walked out the door.

“We’re leaving,” I called.

The group hurried out of their rooms.

“There are a lot of dazed and confused people in there,” Roni said, walking beside me.“They’re not going to stay that way for long.”

“I know,” I said.

“Where are we going then?”Sid asked.

“Back to the base,” I said.

“What about Molev?”Katie asked.

“He’s coming, too,” I said.

As soon as we opened the door, I saw why no one had come in to check on what was going on inside the building. The crowd by the fence had doubled. The guards were no longer just standing there but actively had their guns pointed at the people who were yelling about a “cure” and shaking the fence.

We headed to the helicopter where the pilot and our escort were waiting.

“Miss Wells, we have orders to—”

“Don’t,” I said, cutting off the guard.“It’s obvious this was all a setup. If we don’t leave and things don’t calm down, those people are going to break through that fence.More lives will be lost, and we can’t afford that.So make the right choice, and get this thing in the air.”

“We can’t,” he said.“If we go against orders, we’ll—

“Help us, or go over there and help them,” Roni said, indicating the fence.“Standing in our way isn’t an option.”

The pilot made up her mind first and moved to her seat. When the blades started moving overhead, I raised a brow at the guard. He stepped aside and indicated we should get in.

I turned back toward the buildings.

“Come on, Molev.Staying here isn’t going to help anything.”

A minute later, a grey blur came running at me.He swept me off my feet and into the helicopter. It lifted off the ground before he sat with me in his arms. His heavy exhale and the weight of his head settling over mine comforted me.

“Hopefully, they’ll send someone else, and the next one will be better,” I said.
