He leaned back and chewed, the intensity of his gaze bringing to mind Kevin’s words from several days ago. What had he said? That this one had looked at me like he’d wanted to take me instead of the trucks? Was he trying to hit on me, or was this another test?Did he think seducing me would lead to some kind of world secrets? If so, he was going to be disappointed on two fronts.I didn’t seduce well.Men found me standoffish because I didn’t wear my emotions on my face. And I didn’t have a single helpful bit of knowledge for him.

I waited for him to swallow and offered the remains of the taco.

“Please don’t bite my fingers,” I said when he leaned forward.

His lips twitched. This time, it didn’t offend me.His reaction was probably the same one any other guy would give. While he chewed that mouthful, I put together more food for him.Bite by bite, he consumed the entirety of the MRE.When I opened the next one and tried feeding that one to him, he shook his head.

“You eat, and I’ll talk.”

“Okay. How many of your kind are there?”I asked before taking a bite.

“Not enough to protect the remaining humans without help,” he said.

“You want to help us?”Patrick asked.“Why?”

“I will keep that to myself for now.”

“Why not tell us?”I asked before Patrick could get pissy about it.

“We don’t yet trust each other,” Molev said.“When we do, we will be able to speak freely and listen openly.”

I paused mid-chew, a little awed by his understanding of the situation.

“Is that what this is then?”I asked after I swallowed.“A trust exercise?”

That corner of his lip curved again.

“Something like that.”

“Okay. If you can’t tell us how many of you there are or why you want to help us, can you tell us where you came from?We know you came from underground after the earthquake, but from where?”

He launched into a too-crazy-to-believe tale that involved fey, magic, and curses. It was a lot to take in, but every time I looked at his ears, I knew I couldn’t doubt everything he said. After all, all stories had grains of truth in them, didn’t they?

“Fey.So you’ve lived and died thousands of times in those caves?”I asked.

“Yes.”

“You’re immortal then?”

“No.Here, we can die.”

“But like the dogs, not easily, I’m betting.”

He dipped his head in a slight nod of agreement.

“We’ve taken up enough of your time,” Patrick said, speaking for the first time in a while.“Get some rest. We’ll talk again in the morning.”

Hearing the words for the command they were, I rose smoothly.

“Good night, Molev.Sleep well,” I said.

He remained sitting when I walked away but moved to lay down when I looked back.

Patrick waited until we were seated in the kitchen to say anything.

“I don’t always understand how you think, Andie, and your intuition has rarely been wrong. But why did you risk yourself and the mission by sending Brandon out?”

“Too many things aren’t adding up.I don’t even know where to start.
