When I lifted my gaze again, I caught the corner of his mouth moving.

“I would like that very much.”

CHAPTERSIX

Tom and Kevinwere already at the table when we entered the dining room.

“Molev, this is Tom and Kevin,” I said, indicating each one.“They’re two of the remaining members of our squad.”

“Hello.”Molev’s tone didn’t exactly convey welcome, but it wasn’t filled with warning either.

“Mind if we join you?”I asked the pair.

Tom warily nodded and Kevin moved down a seat so that Molev and I could sit next to each other. It wasn’t what I’d planned, but once he’d moved, I didn’t have a choice but to cozy up to the grey behemoth. The chair creaked under his weight as he carefully sat.

“How many of those have you broken?”I asked.

“Many,” he said.

“How much do you weigh?”Kevin asked.

Molev blinked at him.Although there weren’t any facial expressions to go with it, that blink felt like he’d just judged Kevin an idiot. He sort of was, but I didn’t like that Molev was judging him for a normal question.

“It took six people to lift you into the back of the MRAP when you were shot, and you sat gently with the experience of a man who’s broken his fair share of chairs.I think it was a valid question,” I said, opening the first MRE.

Molev looked at me and tilted his head, studying me for a heartbeat.

“I have upset you again.How?”

“The way you looked at him just now inferred that you thought his question was stupid.”

Molev grunted.I wasn’t sure how to interrupt a grunt.

“If I misunderstood the situation,” I said, “please educate me.We need to learn how to communicate if we want to work together.”

“We’re working together?”Tom asked Kevin under his breath.

“I do not know the answer to the question,” Molev said.

“Okay.So I made the wrong assumption.I apologize.”

Molev’s gaze flicked over my face before he looked down at the food I’d spread out.

“Which one looks better?”I asked.

“Do you enjoy the red sauce?”he asked instead of choosing.

“As far as tomato sauces go, it’s not bad.The desserts in both of these are better than the main meals, in my opinion, but I have a bit of a sweet tooth.”

He blinked at me.

“You have a tooth that is sweet?”

“No, I mean I like sweets. Both of these meals have M&Ms.The tuna MRE is the one with peanut butter M&Ms and pound cake. This one has plain M&Ms but has a dessert bar that is probably one of my favorites.”

“I think he knows more about her now than we do,” Kevin said to Tom.

“What are M&Ms?”Molev asked.
