“Are we going to talk about the grey?”Brandon asked when Patrick joined us.

“He wasn’t infected, and his appearance had been well after the fifteen-minute mark,” I said.“I think he knew he wouldn’t turn. That’s why he suggested I watch the time.”

“Wait, that means he’s immune, right?”Katie asked.

“Immune or the source.Either way, we need to find him or one of his friends,” Patrick said.

“Since he was already following us, I’m betting we won’t need to look too hard,” Mateo said.

Patrick’s speculative glance swept over me as he nodded.“We’ll find somewhere to hole up for a while.Let’s move, people!”

It was a good thing I didn’t mind driving since I spent the majority of my waking hours behind the wheel now.But part of me still longed for that time when some of my day had been spent socializing.

“You just sighed. You never sigh. What’s going on?”Katie asked.

“Sorry.Slipped into the past for a second there.I think I’m running low on real sleep.”

“Yeah, I heard yours was cut short so you could talk to the grey.”

“Molev,” I said.“If he’s not infected with whatever makes people undead, we need to treat him like a person and gain his trust so he’ll help us.”

Molev was the key to our future, whether we wanted him to be or not.

“And it was sleep I didn’t mind losing. He’s interesting to talk to.He said he’s a fey, like the elves from our stories, and has lived thousands of years in caves beneath the surface. They were cursed there, apparently.”

His eyes and the way he watched me with patient intensity filled my mind for a moment. No matter how much I didn’t want to see it, I was starting to believe that Kevin might have been right. And considering the look Patrick gave me, he was obviously seeing it now too.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to be the key to Molev’s cooperation.

CHAPTERSEVEN

“Doyou think he’ll be able to trust us after everyone shot at him?”

“He might not want to, but we need to find a way to ensure he does.He didn’t turn.We need him.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her shake her head.

“What’s that for?”I asked.

“What do you think they’ll do to him when they find out he’s immune?I wouldn’t want to be him. He’ll either be dissected or spend the rest of his life as a lab rat.”

“Maybe once upon a time in our history, but I don’t think we can afford to do something like that anymore.”

She snorted.“And everyone thinks I’m the naïve one.”

“Hear me out,” I said.“We know how strong and fast he is, right? And we know there’s at least fifty more like him.Yet, only one followed us.Why?Because they didn’t need to send more.Just like he knew he wouldn’t turn, he knows he can wipe us out in a heartbeat. There aren’t enough people left to handle a group of greys if they find out we’re experimenting on one of their kind.”

“And if they take him to one of the island locations where his kind can’t reach him?”

“They wouldn’t.Why risk spreading this problem to the only safe havens we have? No, if they wanted to experiment on him, they would do it in a location that wasn’t being used for survivors. And you see how fast some of these secured bases are falling. There’s nowhere safe to take him. It’s smarter to collaborate. They’ll ask nicely for blood samples and hope that he’ll give them willingly.”

“We’re a species known for taking what we want when we want it.When has humanity ever gone the peaceful route in times of conflict?”

Inwardly, I cringed because she was right.Humans seemed to thrive on war and conflict.I just didn’t think a war against the greys was one we could win.Hopefully, what was left of our government would agree.

The Stryker turned down a long drive that ended with another farmhouse and barn.No shortage of those in the Midwest.Finding a place with power was a little hit and miss on a failing grid, though.

We circled the vehicles then divided into three groups. Two lookouts would stay on top the MRAPs to guard our means of escape.Seven would clear inside and around the house.Eight would check inside and around the barn.
