I didn’t see any sign of Molev until I looked up.He crouched on the barn, scanning the tree line on the other side.

Roni came out of the house behind me.“Patrick said that we’re ditching the electric cars.He doesn’t think there will be a need for scouting missions on the way back.”

It made sense to leave them when there were only fifteen of us.Sixteen if we counted Molev. We needed at least two people per vehicle, one to drive and one to watch. It was safer than driving alone.

“Mind if I hitch a ride with you?”Roni asked with a grin.

“Not at all.But you know he might not choose my vehicle.”

She snorted and followed me to one of the MRAPs.The back of it was already packed with rations and supplies, still leaving ample room for another passenger. In the yard, Patrick signaled for everyone to load up and waved for Molev to join him.

“He’s a beast,” Roni said, watching him jump from the roof.“Can you imagine his level of stamina in bed?”

“I heard the big muscley types get winded more easily,” I said, only half joking.

Patrick spoke to Molev, and whatever Molev said in return had Patrick shaking his head.

“I can’t argue with you there,” Roni said, continuing our conversation.“But something tells me this one would be different.”

“Was it the ears that gave him away?”I asked.

She snorted at my joke then groaned when Molev jogged toward the MRAP at the front of the line.

“He’s hitching a ride with Roland?”She thumped the dash.“Dammit.”

“We’re moving out,” Patrick said over the radio.“Don’t run Molev over if he starts lagging.”

Roni grabbed her radio as I started the engine.

“Repeat that,” she said.

“You heard me.He’s running alongside the convoy until he’s tired,” Patrick said.

Outside my window, I caught a glimpse of him walking alongside the fueler as it started out.Our vehicle brought up the rear.

“Maybe this isn’t so bad,” Roni said.“If he gets tired, we’ll be the ones to pick him up.

However, Molev ruined her plans by running for hours. When we did finally stop for a short break, he disappeared into the trees. She waited until the last second to get back in and tossed the MRE she’d wanted to offer him to the floor.

“Now he’s just showing his sexy off,” she said as she watched him start running again.

“Or he’s just doing what he did when he followed us from Parsons to Vance,” I said.

Even though I knew I was probably right, his stamina was impressive. As was the fact that he didn’t seem to get winded at all while running endlessly. Not even a little.

When we hit our first roadblock, we all got a glimpse of what Molev could do.He jumped on top the Stryker before it punched its way through, then leap-frogged on the vehicles that followed, clearing off infected.

Roni and I heard him land on our cab.A leather boot kicked off the infected trying to climb up her side.A grey hand plucked the one off my windshield. And then we were through, cruising behind the others.

“I’ll check for clingers,” Roni said, crawling toward the back.

When she reached it, she chuckled.

“Looks like Molev is already on it.I don’t need to be infected to want to bite some of that.Mmm.”

“Easy, Roni,” I said.“Maybe you should try playing hard to get for a while.”

“Life’s too short for that,” she said, making her way back to her seat.
