“He do that often?”the leader asked.

“Protect us?Yes.He’s the reason we’re here,” I said, facing forward.“And if the people in charge don’t screw this up, he’ll be the reason we’re still here in another ten years.”

“You believe he’s immune then?”

“Look at his scars. He’s been bitten more times than I can count.Does he look infected to you?”

CHAPTERTHIRTEEN

A look crossedthe man’s face.Doubt mixed with dismissal and suspicion.

“Let me guess. You think he’ll somehow start infecting all of us like the hounds because they came from the same place.”

“We know nothing about him.”

“You know nothing about him. He’s been with us for over a week now. We’ve bunked with him.Shared meals with him.Fought beside him.We used the same shower.Don’t let your fear of what might happen rob you of opportunities in the present. And heisgiving us an opportunity.Don’t ever doubt that.He knows we're looking for a way to end the plague and kill the hounds, and he’s willingly here to help.”

We passed the hospital, which was where I thought they were taking us, and turned left into the first housing area.I’d never been on this side of the base, but after what I’d seen in every town we’d checked, I was expecting cars abandoned in driveways and accumulating debris on the sidewalks. However, everything here was clean.

They pulled into the first driveway and parked.

“This is the assigned house,” the man said, getting out.

I did the same as the others caught up.Roni was winded hard but grinning.Steve and Roland were about the same with Brandon a few yards behind.Sid stuck with Molev, who stopped at the end of the driveway and set Katie on her feet.

“Thanks,” she said.

He nodded and came over to stand beside me as I looked at the house.Bars covered the windows, but when I looked, the rest of the homes had the same feature.

“Have there been problems here?”I asked the soldier beside me.

“Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, right?”

I nodded and followed them to the door.

“There are four bedrooms in this unit. The kitchen is fully stocked.Get some R and R while you can.”

He opened the door and stepped back.Roland cut Molev off when he would have entered first.

“Not this time, my friend,” he said.

Molev glanced at me, and I shrugged.Sid entered next, looking around the immediate area before motioning for us.The rest of us joined them, and Roni shut the door behind us.The heat was on, and the knives were still in the block on the counter.

“This is a good sign,” I said.“They’re treating you like a guest.”

Roni went to the window.

“A guest that requires guards, though.”She glanced at Molev.“So, is he being protected or monitored?”

“Probably both,” I said.

Steve was already in the kitchen, rooting around in the fridge and freezer.

“They went all out.Pizza in the freezer and eggs, bacon, beer in the fridge.”He groaned and pulled out a large bowl of cut fruit.“I never thought there would be a day I’d pass up pizza and beer for this.”

He sat down with the bowl of fruit.Roni smacked the back of his head and took it away from him.

The familiarity and camaraderie touched a place inside me, but I pushed the feeling away.
