Tipping my head back, I looked up at him and found him watching me.

“Don’t dwell on the bad things that have happened,” I said.“They can’t be undone.Instead, look forward to the good things you want to happen, and stay focused on what you can do to make those happen.”

“What good things do you focus on?”

“Getting my nephew somewhere safe.”

He grunted but didn’t close his eyes.

“Did you sleep at all?”I asked, glancing at my watch. It was close to noon.

“Yes.”

“Still tired?”

“No.”

“Then let’s get up and see if we’ve heard from anyone yet.”

We were the first ones awake, but the others heard us moving around and joined us within twenty minutes.

“What are they waiting for?”Katie asked.

“Let’s find out,” Roland said, looking out the window.

We geared up and headed out the door.A jeep was still parked at the curb, but it didn’t hold the same group that had delivered us.When they saw us emerge, they got out of the vehicle.

“What can we do for you?”one of them asked.

“Nothing,” Roni said.“We’re just stretching our legs.”

The men didn’t return to their vehicles, though. When we started along the housing sidewalk, they fell in behind us.They let us go until we wound our way out of the subdivision onto 5th street.

“We have orders to return you to your assigned housing,” the man behind us said.

“And our orders are to do whatever is necessary to save what’s left of the human population,” Sid said without slowing.

“Please return to your assigned housing,” the man repeated more firmly.

The rustle of noise behind us made my neck hair stand on end.I knew the sound of drawing a weapon.

Molev disappeared from my side.By the time I’d turned around, the men were gaping at their empty hands as Molev disappeared behind a nearby house.

“Give me your—” That’s all the man managed before Molev returned.

“Shit,” one of the others said, stepping back.

“I have seen too many humans die to waste more lives. If you wish to retrieve your weapons, they are that way.Undamaged this time.Do not draw them on these humans again.”

“Should we tell him they were going to shoot him?”Katie stage-whispered.

Steve choked on a laugh.

“Pretty sure he knows,” Roni said.“But I appreciate you thinking of us in the crossfire, big guy.”

Molev grunted but didn’t look away from the men as he crossed his arms.

“We’re wasting time,” I said to the soldiers.“He’s here to work with the scientists to come up with a vaccine. If you’re willing to escort us to whomever Molev needs to talk to, you’re welcome to retrieve your weapons while we wait for you.If not, don’t threaten our only chance to stop what’s happening out there. We’re following our orders just like you’re following yours.”
