“Good. Then I believe we will get along fine. In fact, there will almost certainly be an advantage to having others so close.Shared resources and all that.” He flashes that smile again. “We’ll need to meet for drinks sometime. At a mutually agreed-upon location, maintaining the privacy of both our operations.”

Don’t come here again. That’s what he’s saying, and I can bristle, but I sure as hell don’t want him near Haven’s Rock. My brain is still reeling with the implications of this development and trying not to panic.

Dalton only nods, his expression calm. “We’ll leave you to it. We’ll skip the drinks. I don’t mean to be unneighborly, but we have a lot to do, and I’m sure you do, too.”

“We do. I like your thinking, young man. No need to overdo the neighborly parts. Good fences and all that.”

Dalton scoops up my backpack. “I figure this is about where you’d like that fence to be?”

The man purses his lips and squints into the forest. “Maybe a half mile that way?”

“Works for me. Just as long as you know it goes both ways.”

“Andthatworks forme.” The man nods. “I’ll be seeing you.” Another flashed smile. “Or not seeing you, as the case may be.”

Dalton nods back, and we turn and make our way back to our side of that dividing line. We say nothing until we’ve passed that half mile. Then Dalton mutters “Fuck.”

“Yes,” I say.

Fuck indeed.
