Zabriel crooks a finger under my chin and draws my mouth up toward his. Bending down from his great height so that his face is close to mine, his voice is a smoky whisper as he says, “Isavelle.”

He draws theIsaluxuriously over his tongue, and there’s far more bite than usual in thevelle.

“I’ve found you at last, Isavelle.”

I’m captivated by his touch and the way he says my name. His dark lashes are fluttering closed, and his lips are descending toward mine.

Zabriel

Isavelle breathes in sharply, then turns her head to the side, denying me her mouth.

I freeze, my lips a fraction of an inch from her softly curving cheek. “Give me your lips, sha’len.”

“I won’t, Zabriel.”

I groan softly. My name sounds so delectable in her mouth. “Please grant me one kiss. I’ve waited five hundred years to meet you.”

“Five hundred?” Her expression transforms in shock. “You will tell such lies just to claim a kiss? Besides, you’re covered in blood, and we’ve only just met.”

“But the blood of your enemies is my second favorite scent in the world.” I’m playing with a tress of her hair, enjoying the way her scent rises around me. I could stand like this for hours, just breathing her in.

An Omega should instantly melt when she’s given an order from her Alpha, uttering a breathy, cock-hardening,Yes, Alpha, before her lips part for mine. For that matter, she should never have run from me. I should have found her in my bed, buried beneath my sleeping furs and blankets, drunk on my scent, and whimpering for me to bury my knot inside her.

We’ve only just metdoesn’t mean anything when fated mates find each other at last.

I want so much more than her lips. I want to undress her in my bed and squeeze every delicious handful of her. I crave her slick against my fingers and her heavy panting in my mouth. For her to wrap her hand around my knot andsqueeze. Isavelle must be able to smell her Alpha’s desire for her. My hunger for her touch and overwhelming need to protect her.

Can’t she?

Suddenly I’m not so sure. My Omega isn’t behaving as I’ve heard all Omegas do when a fated pair finally meet. She should be gazing up at me like I’m her whole world, but maybe she hasn’t realized who I am yet.

That must be it. The poor girl has been living through a war. She’s barely had a moment to inhale my scent.

I go down on one knee and pat my thigh, my gauntleted hand clanking against my leg armor. “Sit here. I know steel plate isn’t the most comfortable place to sit, but you can wrap your arms around my neck and get your face in my gland.”

Isavelle takes half a step back, alarm on her features. “Your…what? Why would I want to get my face in anything?”

I blink in surprise. “So you recognize me, of course.” Since when were Maledinni so clueless about each other’s bodies? Our kind has scent glands in the wrists and the sides and backs of our necks. The gland at the nape of the neck is the most sensitive and fragrant of all.

What the hell has been happening in Maledin while I’ve been locked up under a mountain?

Isavelle shakes her head. “No, thank you. You’ve already told me we’ve never met. I don’t know you.”

“Not my face. My scent. I’m your mate.”

I was prepared for a small frown. A little skepticism. Isavelle glares at me like I’ve insulted her scent. “You arenotmy mate. I don’t even know what that means, but you can’t decide whatever you like about me.”

I leap to my feet, shock slamming through me. “You dare say I’m not your mate? Why are you tormenting me like this? Have I wronged you somehow?”

Has there been some kind of Omega revolution while I was trapped beneath the mountains? Instead of being good and sweet and loving their Alphas, do all Omegas now thumb their noses at them?

“First of all, you’re an enemy invader.”

An invader? Maledin is my home and the home of my people, and it always has been. At this moment, I should be reclaiming what’s mine, but I’ve been tearing Maledin apart looking for her. I’vekilledfor her. She calls me her enemy?

My mate should recognize me as fast as I recognize her. That’s the way this works for our kind and always has.
