The patch of the void that had clung to Precious shrank back, as if terrified of the sound. The Limen itself seemed to shiver. Precious sang out, “Coming!” and flew back toward our home.Herhome.

For now, anyway.

Her steady wingbeats sounded like sand falling through an hourglass, a distant timepiece counting down the seconds. Tears stung my eyes. I’d seen what lay ahead for my sweet child, and knew I wouldn’t be able to protect her. No one could, not unless we wanted all the realms to descend into the Abyss.

Please let us keep her until she’s old enough to survive her future,I prayed. Will you let her stay with us a little longer?

I was speaking to the Mother of All, but to my shock, it was the scrap of void that answered, a sibilant hiss that slid through my mind like a serpent, the way I remembered the evil of the Abyss doing for so long. Tainting everything it touched. Leaving a burning trail of despair across my soul as it spoke.

Yesssss.
