Carol moves beside me making little sounds of annoyance as she heads to the bathroom.
“What do you want?” I snap at him.
“Good morning to you too, Boss. I called to fill you in about yesterday since you didn’t bother asking. I take it you had a busy day?”
I groan and Andrew bursts into laughter so loud it’s almost like he’s next to me.
“I’ll take that as a yes and, just in case, I’m sorry if I interrupted anything. Call me when you are, oh, what’s the word—”
“Did anything happen?” I’m in no mood for Andrew’s banter but for him to call at?—I glance at the screen—six-thirty, there must be a good reason.
“Everything was great, we had a fantastic time, don’t worry. I was just checking in.” With that, he hangs up.
I rub my temples, trying to push away the unsettling feeling but decide not to dwell on it?—if something has happened, he wouldn’t hide it, so maybe it was just curiosity. I shoot another glance at the bathroom door as the sound of running water gets stronger. Yesterday she almost burned me with it?—not that it was her fault—but maybe today will be different.
Carol is standing at the center of the shower, where the shower head is, with her back turned and her face up so that the water hits her directly.
“I take it that the water hasn’t reached boiling point yet.”
Her body shakes just a bit, trying to contain her laughter. “There’s only one way to find out.”
I brace a hand on the glass while the other glides down her spine. Warm enough for her, safe enough for me. She turns her head slightly to glance at me. “What do you think?”
“Perfect,” I say with a sigh and join her.
The shower doesn’t last as long as I want it to, but Carol is set on saying goodbye to her family and going back home. And it’s exactly what I want to avoid now. “Everyone else is staying here, why do we have to leave?” I ask.
Carol wears her bathrobe and bends down to wrap a towel around her head. With a swift move, she steadies it like a hat and goes back to the bedroom. “Because you have a son to take care of and I’ve got a job to do.” Her luggage is still on the floor, so she has to bend down to get her clothes.
“I thought you said you had taken two weeks off.”
She nods and keeps rummaging through her things. “I’ve got your project too,” she points out.
“Is there another reason you want to leave?” I can’t help but think of her ex again. Although they parted abruptly—and I’d like to think permanently—he could still play a role in her need to get away.
“Are you staying like this?” She points at my cock before taking off her towel and throwing it at me.
Still avoiding the topic. Interesting.
I wrap it around my waist, barely covering myself, and repeat the question.
“Well, I didn’t just get two weeks off work. I used my vacation time to fill in for my two weeks’ notice.” She takes a deep breath before continuing. “I resigned.”
“Did you find something else or?—”
“Or.” She nods.
That’s so unlike her. The old Carol would never do something without a safety net and from the time we’ve spent together, the new one wouldn’t either.
“I’ve sent applications to various companies and I’m waiting. It’s just a matter of time.” The sentence feels rehearsed, and I can’t help but wonder how many times she’s said it to herself.
“Is this part of you tying up loose ends?”
“Let’s just say that the past few weeks have made me reevaluate a lot of things, so in a way, yes.”
Am I one of those, I want to ask, but hold my tongue. An answer will only confine us to our current roles. “Where have you applied?” I ask instead. She lists several companies, mine being the fourth on her list. I need to check this with Andrew.
“Let’s just focus on the day, please. I know what I need to do but I need to handle them one by one.” Carol ends up picking a pair of jeans shorts and a white t-shirt along with a matching set of underwear. This time she doesn’t shy away. She takes off her robe and throws it on the bed, taking her time to put on her clothes. Her hair hangs wet behind her shoulders, but she just ties it on top of her head.
