Weirdly, she chose to read in a poorly lit room. When I saw her going up the stairs after dinner, I thought she was just heading to our room. A smile had tipped the edge of my lips as anticipation had swelled in the pit of my belly.

This evening was pure magic. After her climax, I had filled her so deeply and it was so hard for me to hold back from thrusting in rough and fast. My heartbeat fills my ear as the memory pops into my mind, a vivid image of her body writhing uncontrollably under mine, her nipples-- hard and hot, pressing against my chest.

I swallow and move further into the room, watching her with a burning intensity.

“I’ve been thinking,” she says without preamble. Her eyes stared blankly into space. “Maybe a lot more than I should since this is just-- temporary. But I think we need to slow down before things get too far.”

I raise my chin a fraction, completely lost for words.

“What are you saying, Felicity? That you regret what we have-- the special moments we’ve shared?”

She leans back on her elbows.

“That’s not my point.”

Right!

“So, what’s your point? Explain to me in clear terms why you’re looking like your dog died and you had to choose today... an hour after we… dammit, Felicity. This isn’t right.”

“I can’t do this anymore, Declan. I know it’s wrong of me to throw this in your face right after we’ve had sex, but I can’t just let this continue. It’s going to destroy me. I can feel it.”

Sex? She called what we did sex?

Fury rears its head. I close my eyes and exhale, trying to expel the dark energy.

“What else do you feel?” I ask in a low voice, staring right into her eyes. “Tell me, Felicity, what else you’re feeling?”

Her eyes darken.

“Why?”

I move to sit on the armrest of the chair she’s on. She flinches as if my closeness scorches her uncomfortably. The pain I’ve been dreading claws through my veins, painfully slow and overwhelming.

“You’re the kindest man I’ve ever met. The most sincere, caring, and funny. You make me forget my past and shield me from my ex. With you, I’ve known true happiness, but I can’t stop the echoes from my past.” She ends her statement, and adjusts on the chair, facing me, but her gaze wavers. “You see, Allard was good too. He loved me so much and did all the right things… every single one of them… until… until he became a monster… changed. Maybe I’ve not healed from the trauma. Maybe I just need to rediscover myself.”

“You can do that with me. Anything you want. Please, Felicity. Don’t tell me to not love you anymore. I don’t think I can bear not being in your life and loving you with all my heart.”

She sniffles and stands up. The book falls on the floor but neither of us pays attention to it. My heart is shattering and the one woman I’ve come to love is suddenly cold and doesn’t want me.

She stretches out her hand to my face. I lean forward, eager to feel her touch, but then she pulls away and balls the hand into a tight fist. My body shivers as if I am plunged into the middle of winter naked as cold engulfs me.

“I’ll move my things to the guest room. Goodnight, Declan.” Felicity says without seeing me as she walks out of the room.

Chapter Nineteen

Declan

Theparkinglotisgridlocked with cars. I stand with Father on the second-floor balcony of the East Event Center, watching everyone who came for the reception struggle to find a parking spot. The business meeting to announce my new role as the Managing Director went smoothly this morning. This evening, the core leadership group of the company, my family members, some real estate friends, and a few local media reporters gathered here at the East Event Center for the celebratory reception.

“I’m no psychic, but I say we’re going to be here all evening, Son.”

I chuckle.

“You don’t need to possess supernatural powers to know that, Father.”

Father pulls his gray windbreaker around his body, complaining of the cold air. I glance at him and nod toward the door.

“Want to head in now?”
