This time, even Allard does a complete turnaround; he practically jogs out of the building.

I return my gaze to Declan’s, he is staring at me, his light brown eyes scanning me from head to toe. My cheeks heat up from his obvious assessment, I struggle to act unaffected by it.

"Are you all right?"

"I’m fine now," I say, glancing up to flash a grateful smile. "Thank you for standing up for me."

He studies me for a bit, his eyes still dark with what I assume to be controlled rage.

“Where do you live? I can drop you off, then send someone to bring your car in the morning.”

Despite the dread fastening its grip around my guts, I muster a small grin at the man that just played my knight.

“Riverview. But I don’t think he’ll be dumb enough to linger after that threat you just shot at him,” I say, my face flush as Declan's eyes have refused to release me. “Thank you,” I add quickly, lowering my head slightly.

"You're welcome," Declan says, in a moment silence descends between us, and I find myself struggling for words.

What do you say to someone who has just saved you from being assaulted by your ex?

"I am going to think that whoever that was is sensible enough to leave the building. But just in case he hasn't, you can walk with me to the parking lot."

"Thank you."I smile again at Declan and lean down to grab my bag, following him down the hallway and toward the elevator.

We both step into it as he pressed the button for the Ground floor. We ride the elevator in silence, I am more than happy when Declan does not attempt to make conversation or ask questions about the man he had just saved me from.

Even though I am more than happy that someone was there to stop Allard from doing his worst, I cannot help but feel bad about how helpless I felt when he gripped me.

What would I have done if Declan had not appeared at that moment?

I wish that I hadn't felt so helpless. I wish that I'd learned to stand up for myself, what if this happens again and Declan is not there to save me?

The moving car comes to a stop, Declan chivalrously steps back to allow me to exit first. I move on ahead of him, walking as fast as I can and putting as much distance as I can between us. If Allard is lurking in the parking lot, waiting for round two, I want to be able to face him squarely and stand up for myself without the interference of another man.

When I step toward my car, I don't find Allard lurking in the shadows. I silently get into my car as Declan does the same, remaining in his car without starting it, a clear indication that he's waiting for me to drive out first. I start my car and proceed to drive slowly out of the parking lot without another glance in Declan's direction.

Chapter Three

Declan

Ilookaroundthehalf-filled conference room, noting the somber faces of Father's workers and wonder what they think I am about to tell them.

My eyes sweep over the room until they land on the beautiful brunette from yesterday, the one I had witnessed a man almost assault.

I have seen her around; she is one of Father's real estate agents, one of the very best. Father has always had nothing but praise for her. Before now, the woman and I had never had any reason to interact, not until yesterday.

I allow my eyes to run over her face as I wonder what the strange man had wanted from her. She looks good, dressed in a pantsuit and jacket, with her hair tied in a low, severe chignon that displays her beautiful, angular face and its features. When my eyes crawl back to hers, I find her eyes already on me, questioningly.

I clear my throat and look away from her.

"Good morning, everyone."

They all chorus back, and I begin the meeting.

As my father would do, I take reports from every single one of the department heads, analyze financial performance and review profits, revenue and expenses. We also delve into property maintenance, repairs, and lingering tenancy issues.

When all of that has been cleared, I look around the conference room and say, “Lastly, I would like to make an announcement."

I watch the staff shift a little closer to the table. Somehow, my eyes find that of the beautiful brunette, Felicity, from yesterday; she looks anxiously back at me, I look away from her surprisingly beautiful green eyes.
