“It’s Dad’s birthday and he said yes,” Livvie says, wagging a finger at him. “You have to do it.”

Hugh groans then sighs. “Fine. I choose truth.”

Livvie crosses her arms over her chest and rubs her chin. “Hmmm. What can I ask that I don’t already know?”

Hugh straightens, his freckles nearly disappearing under his reddening cheeks. “Hey! I’m not that boring. I have secrets you know.”

Livvie snorts. “Yeah right.”

“I do! I lived an entire life before you were born, little girl.”

“Uh-huh. Playing football, and perfecting your famous cinnamon rolls? Boring.” She sighs and waves her hand dismissively. “What’s your favorite food you make at the bakery?”

“That’s what you want to know?” Hugh wrinkles his nose.

“Sure. It’s as good a question as any. It’s not like you’re gonna confess to a murder or something.”

“Okay, you’re right. I’m not going to confess to a murder, but I do more than bake.”

“Prove it,” Livvie says. “Tell me something nobody else knows.”

Hugh straightens and presses his lips closed. “Never mind. My favorite things to make are the mango cake and the lemon eclairs.”

Cimmeron chuckles and slaps the back of Hughes back. “It’s alright, man. Not all of us are meant to be wild and crazy. Some people need to be the anchor.”

Hugh mumbles something indiscernible, which only makes Cimmeron bark out more laughter.

“Shut up, man!” Hugh says.

“Okay!” Stella steps forward, shoving between the two men and putting her hands between them. “We’re here to celebrate. Let’s keep going.”

Stella’s eyes widen at Hugh, and she gives him a pointed look.

Hugh winces and nods. “You’re right. Keep going. Sorry, I got distracted.”

Hugh clears his throat and turns to me. “Ryan. Truth or dare?”

My mind immediately flashes to the last time I played and how, when I chose truth, Livvie had me admit how I still loved Babs. I recoil from that memory and say, “Dare.”

All my friends exchange glances. Hugh breaks out into a grin.

Crap. I think this was a trap.

Good Riddance

Carrie

Ilogintomybank account and verify that the money from the house is in there.

Holy smokes. I’ve never seen so many zeros in my bank account!

“Would you like anything besides water while you wait for your guest?” the twenty-something server with perfectly styled hair says, inclining his head to me.

I look up from my phone and smile. “Water is fine, thank you.”

“Very good. I’ll check back in a few to see if your guest has arrived.”
