She studied him, absorbing his words. His heart raced, and he was sure she could hear the thudding.

Had he just fucked it all up?

Yes, he wanted to see where their attraction went. He hadn’t lied about that. But he also valued their newfound friendship and didn’t want to jeopardize it.

He tried not to squirm under her stare. She was looking at him like he was a puzzle, and he didn’t know how he felt about that.

Abruptly, she scooted to his end of the couch, settling next to him. He reminded himself to breathe.

“I don’t want to make things complicated for you,” she whispered.

Their gazes locked.

She reached for his face, hesitating midair.

He held absolutely still.

Whatever she saw in his eyes must have been enough to reassure her, because a moment later, her hands gently framed his jaw. “But I really want to kiss you.”

He broke out into a wide smile. Damn, this brave woman was stunning.

Closing the distance between them, he reveled in the soft touch of her lips. One arm went around the small of her back, drawing her closer, while the other cupped her jaw, tilting her face up. She tensed for a brief second, but then her arms wrapped around him and she melted.

He traced the seam of her lips with his tongue, wordlessly begging for entrance.

Her lips parted and her tongue met his, tentative at first, then growing bolder. He groaned. Needing her closer, he changed the angle of his head, deepening their kiss. Her hands moved to his chest, grabbing onto his shirt.

The press of her body against his had all his blood rushing south. He gently nipped at her bottom lip, and she let out a quiet moan that had his cock weeping. When her fingers ran through his hair and fisted, he prayed she would never stop.

But he knewheshould. As much as he didn’t want to.

He pulled away, breathless and dazed. Then, unable to help himself, he dropped another kiss to her perfect, kiss-swollen lips, this one quick.

“While I appreciate your concern,” he said. “Don’t worry about complicating things for me, sweetheart. I’m a grown man.”

She shifted against him, and he didn’t miss how his hard length pressed against her.

“No kidding,” she murmured as a blush stole over her cheeks.

“I can make my own decisions, Alex, and I know what I want.” Her brow scrunched in question, and he chuckled. “You. Just as you are. Whenever you’re ready.”

His heart stuttered as she leaned into him and gently pressed her lips to his. The kiss heated, and their tongues danced. Attraction was definitely not their problem. But he wouldn’t rush her. He’d pushed enough.

With a pained smile, he pulled away again. “I’m going to go, sweetheart.” He untangled himself from their embrace. They stood, and he tucked her to his side as they headed to the front door. “Tomorrow, then.”

“Tomorrow?” she asked. The caveman in him took great satisfaction in how her voice trembled on that one word. “What about it?”

The hazy, lust-filled look in her eyes made him grin. He’d done that, put that dazed look on her face. And confirmed that slowing things down was the right decision.

He held her face in his hands. He couldn’t help it; she had the softest skin. “I want to see you again tomorrow. We’re not done with the getting-to-know-you part.”

She looked up at him with those beautiful whiskey-colored eyes, and he felt an unfamiliar tug in his chest. He kissed her, making sure not to linger too long, then turned to leave.

“Thank you for spending tonight with me. I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said. Closing the door behind him, he added, “Don’t forget to lock up.”

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

She giggled as Preston carried her through the front door, over their proverbial threshold. Married! Glancing up at her new husband, she let out a blissful sigh. She couldn’t believe she was officially this wonderful man’s wife.
