“You know...” She toyed with his lapel. “If you don’t get home too late, I wouldn’t be opposed if you came over to... check on me.”

“Is that so?” His rumbly voice sent shivers down her spine.

“I mean, if you happened to also stay the night, I wouldn’t be opposed. Just sayin’.”

He flashed that sexy smile of his, and her stomach fluttered. She still couldn’t believe thatshehad made this amazing, mouthwatering man lose control of himself in a freaking storage closet.

She wrapped her arms around his waist. Because she could. “I was thinking that since Roxie gave me the day off tomorrow, and sinceyouhave the day off tomorrow, perhaps we could have breakfast or brunch with a reprise of the storage closet incident. What do you think?”

He returned her mischievous grin, holding her close. “You don’t even have to ask, sweetheart. I’m all yours. You guys drive home safe. We’ll probably be a couple more hours.” Leaning down, he gave her a quick kiss. “If you’re already asleep when I come over tonight, I know a great way to wake you up.”

Yes, please. Her tired body hummed in anticipation.

She stepped away with a satisfied sigh. As of this moment, she had no complaints. Sore feet, tired body—none of it mattered. Life was finally looking up.

CHAPTERTHIRTY

Alex’s eyes blinked open. The room was still dark, the only illumination coming from the streetlamp outside. Rolling over, she checked the time. And stilled.

What was that?

She shot up in bed, struggling to listen through the blood rushing in her ears.

She’d heard something. A creak.

Had that woken her?

She eased back down and pulled the duvet up to her chin. It had probably just been the house settling. But a prickle in her belly kept her senses on full alert.

For five long seconds, there was silence.

Another creak. On the stairs.

Her breath locked in her throat. She remained utterly still.

Holy shit, please let it be Quinn. Please.

But she knew it wasn’t. The tiny hairs that rose on her arms told her it wasn’t.

Her heart threatened to burst from her chest. The doorknob began to turn. Her hands trembled and grew clammy. A bitter, metallic taste filled her mouth.

Fear. It was the taste of pure fear.

The door crept open, and her stomach pitched. A shadow lurked on the other side. It belonged to neither Quinn nor Joe. The intruder’s hulking mass filled the entire doorway.

He took a small step into the room. She swallowed a whimper as the light from the window glinted off something in his right hand. A knife.

Beads of sweat broke out over her forehead. A wave of nausea washed over her. Her lips began to go numb, and her vision wavered.

A panic attack was coming. She had to act before it paralyzed her.

He stood at the foot of her bed, his face hidden in the shadows. If he would only move two steps to the right, she could maybe make it to the door. Maybe.

He took one step to the right.

She held her breath.Just one more. Please!

As she was about to bolt from the bed, a sound caused her to freeze.
