“Some things are more important.” He leaned over and gave her a soft, lingering kiss. His fingers caressing her cheek and jaw.

Anne’s heart melted. She loved him so much.

They were in the medical room and Anne had changed into a hospital gown. She sat on the table thing, the paper crinkling as she moved, with her ankles demurely crossed. They didn’t speak. Just waited. After about ten minutes, the doctor arrived.

“Hello! Sorry to keep you waiting. How are you feeling today?”

The next few minutes were spent catching the doctor up on Anne’s current condition, which was pretty healthy.

“Okay, well let’s see if we can hear the little one,” he said. “Go ahead and lay down.”

Anne lay back and the doctor moved aside the gown to bare her stomach.

“This will be a bit chilly,” he warned before squirting gel on her abdomen. Anne sucked in a breath. Blane took her hand and held it.

“Okay, let’s see what we have.” The doctor used some kind of device and moved it over Anne’s abdomen. After a moment, a sound filled the room.

“Ah. There you go,” he said.

It was a rapid beat. The beat of a heart. Tears came to Anne’s eyes and she looked up at Blane. He was looking at her, an expression of awe on his face. She laughed through her tears and he kissed her.

“This is the most amazing moment in my entire life,” he whispered. “And it’s all because of you.”

The doctor discreetly looked away as he stored the device and used wet paper towels to clean off the gel from Anne’s stomach.

“Everything looks good!” he enthused. “I’ll see you again in four weeks.”

It took Anne a few moments to compose herself. Blane helped her dress. It was wonderful to have his support. She couldn’t imagine doing this alone. She knew lots of women did, but she was grateful to have the father of her child standing by her side.

“May I take you to lunch?”

“That would be lovely. I’m starving.”

They ate lunch at a charming bistro and Blane entertained her with amusing stories. She laughed until she cried at some of his recounting. He held her hand, offered her bites of his entrée. Made sure she ordered dessert.

It was absurd, but she felt so wonderful, being fussed over. She felt special to the person she loved most. And he had such larger things to attend to, yet he was totally focused on her.

“One more week,” he said. “We haven’t settled on a rehearsal dinner venue. Did you have anything in mind?”

“Mount Vernon.” It popped out of her mouth almost involuntarily.

“Done.”

And he was as good as his word. They had the small wedding party as well as several close friends attend a lovely four course dinner at Mount Vernon. Anne was a bit of a history nut so she was ecstatic. And Blane had made it happen.

“Come home with me,” he whispered against her lips, kissing her senseless.

“I can’t,” she protested. “It’s bad luck.”

Blane made a groaning noise. “You’re killing me, baby.”

Anne’s lips curved into a smile. “It’ll be worth the wait.”

Anne was settling into bed. They had one week to go. Everything was ready and set. The dress. The flowers. The cake. The reception.

She touched her engagement ring. She’d had a ring made for Blane. It was waiting in her jewelry box.
