He snuck a sideways glance at Anne. She held herself perfectly arranged, hands crossed in her lap and looking out the window. Obviously, she wasn’t a fidgeter. Her very stillness had a calming effect on him. She’d rebounded so well from the events at the charity show. Or had she?

“May I ask if you’re okay after the…incident?” How else to frame it?You okay after watching me kill someoneprobably wouldn’t go over well.

She hesitated and their gazes briefly met before she looked away. “I had a couple of nightmares last night, but I’m a big girl. I can handle it.”

Again, her quiet acceptance impressed him. She hadn’t fallen apart last night and it appeared that it would take a lot to upset her placid demeanor. That, or she hid it very well.

“Still, I’m sorry for your nightmares. I still have them sometimes and they’re not fun.” A confession he doesn’t usually make, but something about her reticence makes him want to bond with her in some tangible way.

“From your time in the service?” She asked. He nodded. “How long have you been out?”

Blane thought for a minute. “Years. Over a decade. But occasionally a friend needs help. I have a few who went into the security field.” Again, not something he would otherwise volunteer.

Her brows rose. “And no one knows you do this?”

He shook his head. “Just a handful. And now you.”

She seemed taken aback by the admission, then smiled. “Your secret’s safe with me.”

Their gazes caught again. “I know.”

The car was quiet the rest of the way to her apartment, with Blane scouring his thoughts for a way to get her to see him again. He’d pulled up and walked her to her door without coming up with anything. Dinner was the go-to, but it was so mundane.

They stopped and she gathered her keys from inside her purse.

“Thanks again—”

He cut her off with a kiss.

Pulling her into him, he sealed her lips with his, half-expecting a slap any second. She was taken aback and just stood there for a moment, then she melted into him.

Her body turned pliant as he kissed her. Her lips softened and parted slightly, allowing him to deepen the kiss. Her arms crept up around his neck and he pulled her closer.

The taste of her was intoxicating. The slide of her tongue against his prodded a groan from him. Her breasts pressed against his chest, and he reveled in her curves. She fit perfectly into him. He fervently wished her hair wasn’t braided so he could run his fingers through it.

This was perfect. This wasright.

Anne abruptly pulled away and Blane reluctantly let her go. Her eyes were wide, her cheeks flushed, and her lips red from his kiss.

“What was that?” she asked, breathless.

“We have something,” he said, his voice roughened from the shared interlude. “Something rare. I like you and you like me, too. Think about that.” He handed her a business card. “My cell is on the back.”

He turned and walked away while he still could.

Chapter Six

Anne stood, frozen, in the hallway as Blane left. To say she hadn’t expected that was an understatement.

That kiss… Well, she’d read about kisses that were earth-shattering, she’d just never experienced it for herself.

The way he’d pulled her into him, taking her mouth with a kind of aggressive passion, had set her veins on fire. She’d felt as though she’d been shocked by an electric current. Yes, they’d had a shiver of sexual tension the entire day, but she’d had no idea it could spark into something so all-consuming. And wow, did that man know how to kiss.

Anne thought about what he’d said. It just didn’t jive with what she thought she knew about him. Nothing about today did.

Unlocking her door, she stepped inside, discarding her coat and purse. She needed to change and make a cup of tea.

Glancing into her living room, she froze, a sharp yelp coming from her throat.
