When she woke, she was alone in the bed. The delicious aroma of coffee filled the air. She took a quick shower and when she emerged, her clothes were waiting on the bed, dry. After dressing, she went to the kitchen and saw Blane at the stove. Bacon sizzled in a pan, making Anne’s mouth water.

She landed in a chair at the kitchen table, content to watch him cook. Another pan was sizzling but she couldn’t see what was in it. He was dressed as well, and she took a moment to admire the breadth of his shoulders and his amazing ass. She couldn’t believe he was hers now. Anne felt her face heat as she remembered some of the things they’d done last night. She was a bit sore between her thighs, but in the best way.

After a moment, he turned and saw her. He smiled, obviously pleased, and came over to lean down and kiss her. The kiss started as just a press of his lips, but then she parted her mouth and their tongues entwined. Blane palmed her breast through her shirt and she gasped, heat pooling between her legs.

Blane pulled back, his eyes a stormy gray and filled with desire.

“I’d take you again,” he murmured, “but the bacon would burn.” He winked and returned to the stove, leaving Anne breathing too hard.

Blane set a cup of coffee in front of her. “There’s sugar, but no creamer.”

“That’s fine.”

They ate bacon and hashbrowns for breakfast, and Anne decided it was the best meal she’d ever had. Her eyes kept drifting to his hands while they ate, remembering what they’d done to her. Being in love made all the difference, turning sex into making love.

“So you cook?” she asked, breaking the silence and forcing her thoughts away from last night. “Kind of unusual for a senator.”

“Learned from my housekeeper growing up,” he said, adding more bacon to his plate. “She thought it an essential skill. I don’t get the opportunity very often though. Daniel is much better than I am. Plus, I just don’t have the time.”

“Will we be rescued soon?” she asked. Suddenly, she really wanted to be home. All of this had been so much to process.

Blane nodded, making note of her pallor and the dark circles under her eyes. She’d eaten well, so that was good. But he was still worried about her. He wouldn’t be satisfied until his team got here and the medic took a look at her.

“How is your ankle?” he asked.

Her brow creased and after a moment she replied, “Better. Still aches, but I can walk.”

“My team should be here soon,” he told her. “They’ll have a medic with them.”

“The Senate has a team for stuff like this? Like FBI or something?”

“No. My personal security team.” And when he got back to D.C., he was going to find Smithson and personally kick his ass. The thought of what might’ve happened to Anne, how he’d lied to her, made rage simmer in his veins. At the moment, he wanted to wrap her in bubble wrap and lock her inside his house where he knew she’d be safe. Not that she’d let him.

Anne’s brows rose. “And they come when you call?”

“That’s what I pay them for.”

Just then there was a knock on the door. Blane was on his feet in an instant. He pulled Anne to her feet and pushed her into the corner of the kitchen and reached for his gun.

“Stay here,” he commanded.

Cocking the gun, he walked toward the door and carefully peered through the side panel window. He recognized the man standing outside and smiled. He flicked on the safety and opened the door. Kade strode into the room.

“You really made me hike in the freezing cold in the middle of fucking nowhere to save your ass?”

Blane ignored him. Glancing behind Kade he asked, “Where’s the rest of the team?”

“I told them to hang back just in case you hadn’t handled the situation.” A dark eyebrow rose. “I’m guessing I can call them in?”

“Yeah. Especially the medic.”

Kade’s gaze sharpened, the usual sardonic look gone. “You get hit?”

“Not me. I’m fine. Bumps and bruises. Not a big deal. It’s Anne. Her ankle.”

“The girl is here? How?”

“I’ll tell you the whole story later. Come meet her.” For some reason, it was vitally important to Blane that Kade meet and like Anne. His visions were already painting pictures of family holidays with Kade and Kathleen and their kids, plus he and Anne and their kids. A family. At last.
