A wave of memories flooded my mind. Even though he looked slightly different, his lips still tasted like cherries dipped in honey. “It is you,” I said, still recovering from the kiss. “But how is it possible for you to be alive after all this time?”

A corner of his mouth rose as he said, “As much as I wish to appease your curiosity, at the moment, I cannot risk being in The Ordinary Realm for long. So, if you feel confident enough that I am your husband, please enter the car.” He once more moved toward the backseat door.

My hesitation didn’t hold me back this time, and I got in the car. The opulence of the car’s interior stunned me. Never in my life had I stepped inside such luxury. The smell of black leather and the motor’s soft purr gave me another modern-time culture shock. The luxurious kind.

“Are you comfortable?” Gabriel asked as he sat next to me.

“How could I not be? Last time I rode a vehicle, it had four legs,” I said.

He laughed. “I’m glad we can accommodate to your needs, Milady.”

“Wait, if you are sitting here next to me. Who’s going to drive the car?”

“Milady deserves my undivided attention. Thus, we have a chauffeur for such cases.” Gabriel pointed to the front seats.

Only then it dawned on me that we were not the only people in the car. “You can afford a chauffeur? What do you do for a living?”

“Ah, more questions. But first things first. Troy,” Gabriel said as he turned toward a black man in the passenger’s seat. “The goods, please.”

The man, looking like a bodybuilder, handed him a tray with four coffee cups of various sizes. I wanted to ask who he was, but the coffee smell completely overtook me.

“I didn’t know what kind of coffee you preferred, so, I took the risk and chose for you. We have espresso, Americano, latte, and mocha. And if these don’t suit your taste, Troy, my second-in-command, is holding another tray of four cups for you to choose from,” Gabriel said.

Gabriel had a second-in-command? I wanted to find answers to the incessant questions popping in my mind but first, coffee. “After living in medieval times for two years, I could drink coffee-washed water, and it would still taste amazing. But I’ll go with the Americano.”

“Let’s not forget dessert. Troy, give us the box,” said Gabriel.

Troy handed him a white box, and when Gabriel opened it, heaven sparkled before my eyes. The box contained an assortment of bite-sized cakes topped with pink frosting, chocolate, or sprinkles.

“We searched through the entire town to find an American-style bakery,” said Gabriel while I chomped on my first dessert in two years and chugged it with coffee. The tender taste of sponge cake with the bold and rich contrast of chocolate threw me into a dream of sugary indulgence. Only after gobbling several more cakes and drinking my second coffee, I noticed Gabriel observing my every move. With two full cheeks of cake, I looked at him and realized my unrestrained behavior. So much for being a sophisticated medieval princess. “Excuse me,” I said as crumbles fell out of my mouth.

He chuckled. “If I were in your shoes, I would’ve behaved the same,” he said as I swallowed the last cake bites. “You have a crumb on your lips. Let me help you.” He wiped the escaped crumb with his thumb and then licked it in the most sensual way without even realizing it.

I lost the ability to speak. This Gabriel had a new vibe to him, and I didn’t know how to react to it. He noticed me ogling and asked, “You wish to join in on the treat?”

My brain went blank again. It seemed to act this way only in the presence of modern-day Gabriel. Then again, he didn’t offer me much time to think as he leaned and kissed me fiercely. The fusion of tastes between chocolate cake, coffee, and his tender lips threw me into a spiral. I wished to care about the audience in the car, but the need to kiss Gabriel, the man I married and loved so dearly, outweighed any other argument my mind could conjure. My desperate wish to live with Gabriel in my time had been fulfilled. Now, the only thing I had to do was find out how it had happened.

Chapter 2

The more he kissed me, the more I lost myself in his embrace. When Gabriel stood in front of me, the sense of time became distorted, and things seemed to always disappear in the background. Eternity never had so much meaning as when I bathed in his presence. I do not know how long we let ourselves become enthralled with each other’s mouths, but a short cough woke us both up from our passion.

“Troy, now it’s not the time,” said Gabriel, seething with anger.

“It is unsafe to remain here, Sire,” said Troy with a slight French accent.

Sire? He had a second-in-command who called him a Sire?

“Fine. Roger, drive us to the hotel,” said Gabriel as he helped me straighten my clothes.

“Wait. I still have my medieval dress on.”

“Do not fret, Milady. There’s a whole wardrobe waiting for you at the hotel,” said Gabriel.

“But didn’t you say we were going to the restaurant?” I asked.

“This hotel has one of the best restaurants in town. I made a reservation for tonight. But if you are still hungry, we can drive to any place you desire and buy some food.”

“No, no. After such a feast of desserts, I feel like I couldn’t ever eat again.”
