“What next? Did you have a car set up anywhere close?” I asked as I joined her in Kira’s search for something unknown.

“Yes, the next one that decides to take us is the one,” Kira said and extended a thumb up to a car that passed by.

“What? You want us to hitchhike?” I couldn’t believe the recklessness of it all.

“Do not worry. Humans here are friendly. We’ll get a ride in no time.”

“Or until Gabriel’s entire retinue will capture us,” I said.

“Trust the process. Think positive,” Kira said as she tried to stop another car unsuccessfully.

“How can I think positive when I have a baby on my back and a slew of vampires aiming to take her away from me,” I said as desperation settled in.

“How about you let me handle it,” Kira said and took off her black long-sleeve shirt and remained in her bralette.

“What are you doing?”

“Listen, human men are simple creatures. When they see something they wish, they feel more compelled to stop in the middle of the night to pick up two female strangers.”

“It’s never so simple.” And just as I finished my sentence, a small truck stopped next to us. “Or maybe it is.”

Kira went to the guy, talked something with him, and called for me to join.

Inside the truck was a middle-aged man with a mustache thicker than the one Vlad the Impaler wore (if that was even possible).

“Mister here said he’s going to drive us to my sister’s house about a hundred kilometers from here. The only problem is that he doesn’t have much space in the back. It’s full of chickens,”said Kira.

“I’m sure I will manage,” I said.

Kira put on her shirt and helped me take Athena off my back. The driver’s eyes bulged once he saw the baby, but it was too late to express any disappointment. I hopped in the back with Athena and sat on a chicken pen while Kira sat in front, closer to the danger the driver might pose. Even on smooth roads, the truck resembled more of a rattle toy. The chicken probably had their first flying lessons in it. I held Athena close to my chest, and slowly but surely, we were on our way out of endangerment.

By the time we arrived at Kira’s sister, the chickens and I managed to become friends. At the same time, Kira became a good listener to the driver, who told her his entire love life story. After hearing about his failed relationships, Kira probably felt bad for the man and kissed him on the cheek. “You’ll find your one and only. Just keep on searching,” she said.

The driver blushed, smiling like a fool in love. Afterward, he became more helpful. He gave me a hand to climb down and even escorted us to the house.

“Thank you,” said Kira and granted him another kiss on the cheek. The driver left with the biggest grin on his face.

“You played with this man’s feelings,” I said.

“It’s going to be his best memory yet,” she said. “Come, let’s wake up my sister.” Kira knocked at the door, but for the longest time, no one answered.

Only after several minutes, we heard the voice of an older woman coming from inside.

“What are you doing here? And at this hour?” asked Kira’s sister in Romanian.

“We need your help, Zuzanna,” Kira said.

Her sister didn’t look convinced. She pulled Kira inside, and they began arguing in Polish.

After a short debate, Kira opened the door and let Athena and me in. “Excuse my sister. She’s been living on her own for some time and is suspicious of new faces.”

“Isn’t she suspicious of you? Given your powers and stuff,” I asked.

“Well, she’s been seeing the same face for fifty years. Plus, Zuzanna is the youngest in our family, so she must listen to her older sister.”

I entered the humble abode and was greeted by a cat in search of attention, while Zuzanna said something to Kira in Polish.

“Zuzanna said she doesn’t have enough space for all of us,” Kira said.
