“I see you’re one of those eager ones.”

“Especially when it comes to crocheting.”

Chapter 26

The following day, Zuzanna received a phone call from her landline. It could only be her sister. Kira was on her way back, and I couldn’t be more elated. This meant she succeeded in escaping the castle safely.

Once Kira arrived at Zuzanna’s house, the first thing I did was retrieve all the baby supplies for Athena. Everything else needed to wait. Once the baby was snuggled in a freshly-washed blanket with brand-new socks and a hat made by Zuzanna, we settled at the kitchen table for some tea.

“Did you manage to bring everything?” I asked.

“Almost. The passport, wallet, and phone were fairly easy to find. They were stashed in a nightstand next to the bed.”

“Weird, I didn’t place them there,” I said.

“Also, the phone had its charger placed neatly next to it as if someone planted them there.”

“Could it be Gabriel? Why would he do that?” I asked.

“Maybe he assumed I would help you and didn’t want you and Athena to go through hardships.”

“But that doesn’t make sense. I’ve seen with both my eyes his attempt at killing his own daughter. Then how in the world would he act against his intentions and help us?”

“There must be more to the story,” Kira said.

“What about the letters?” I asked.

“After I took your things from the bedroom, I went into the study and searched for the letters. No one was there, not even Shadow, which I found unsettling. Nonetheless, I opened all the drawers and found only one letter. Here it is,” Kira said.

The paper of the letter looked worn out, but whatever was written on it was still legible. I hid the letter in my pocket and continued the conversation, “So the whole time you were there, no one saw you?”

“That’s the eerie part. There was no one there. As if all the staff and Gabriel’s retinue simply vanished.”

“That doesn’t make any sense,” I said.

“From the time I started living in the castle, I never witnessed such an occurrence.”

“Could it be they’re plotting something in order to capture us?” I asked.

“If so, then we must hurry,” Kira said. “We must buy the tickets as soon as possible. Your only feasible escape is for you to hide in The Ordinary Realm. Gabriel could’ve captured you by now. If he didn’t do so, it means you are safe and should stay in a place with no supernatural beings.”

“Does that mean you won’t be flying with me?” I asked.

“I can if you believe I will be of help,” Kira said.

“I do need your help. I don’t know where The Other Realm is in Washington state. I fear I might encounter a few Americanstrigoion my way to the grocery shop and not even know it.”

Kira laughed her eyes out. “That’s the most preposterous thing I’ve ever heard.Strigoiinever leave the woods. It’s in their nature. You might encounter a vampire, but few know you’re their queen or that you have lived in the Transylvanian castle. Plus, only OD vampires can survive a walk in the sun without burning.”

“Your words do give me some peace of mind. But I still wish for you to join me,” I said.

“Very well. It will be an honor to escort Your Majesty to the US,” Kira said solemnly.

We looked at Zuzanna, who clearly didn’t understand what we were talking about. Kira explained everything in Polish. Several deep nods and a few words followed from Zuzanna.

“Zuzanna said she thinks it’s a great idea to make me your travel companion,” Kira said. But then she whispered to me, “but I secretly believe she wants to get rid of me.” Kira giggled. “Good thing I still love her more than anything in this world.” Kira took her sister’s wrinkly hand and brought it to her face. “You’ll never escape my sisterly love,” Kira said in Romanian.

The words took Zuzanna by surprise, but soon she mellowed under the gaze of her sister.
