“I see. That might actually work.”

“I’ll give them a call tonight,” Mei said.

“How are your parents? Did they reestablish their art gallery?”

“Actually, they decided to invest the money into a glass-blowing school and take only projects they like. After the fun they had fulfilling Gabriel’s request, my parents realized why they started the business in the first place. And that is for the love of the art. So now they have less but more fun projects and enough time to help others learn the craft.”

“That’s amazing.”

The phone rang and startled our conversation. It was a video call from Mom. “Mom, hello. Is everything okay?” I asked.

Mom looking pale as a sheet of paper said: “Honey, Athena is missing. We’ve searched the whole house. I’m starting to fear the worst.”

Chapter 28

My heart plummeted and adrenaline rushed through my body. I almost lost my ability to speak. I couldn’t believe Gabriel would go to the extent of stealing Athena from my parent’s house.

“Wait. I think your father found her in the crib. But I looked in the crib twice before, and she wasn’t there. How is that even possible?” Mom said.

“Let me see her, Mom,” I said desperately.

When I saw and heard Athena wailing her little heart out, I sighed in relief. What could’ve happened? Then I noticed she looked like she traveled through a tornado. Her hair and blanket were in disarray, though she didn’t look hurt in any way.

Mom confirmed my thoughts. “She looks unusually disheveled,” Mom said. “As if she was in the middle of a windstorm.”

No. That wasn’t conceivable. Did she already travel in time? I always knew she would. But to time travel as a baby? That was preposterous. How was I supposed to explain it to my parents? Where was a book on baby time-traveling when you need it?

“Um, Mom. It’s probably the sleepless nights you’ve had up until now. It could’ve been a nightmare.”

“A nightmare we shared with your dad? I don’t think so. Someone entered our house and stole the baby and then, for some weird reason, returned her,” my mom said frantically.

“At least she is home and safe,” I said.

“I think we should call the police,” Mom said.

In all other cases of suspected kidnappings, I would’ve raised two hands on calling the police, but in this case, it could snowball into an uncontainable situation. “As long as everyone is okay, I don’t see the need to call the police. They might inspect the area, but that’s about it. If it happens again, though, we should absolutely contact authorities,” I said, trying to sound as calm as possible.

“If you say so. Aren’t you afraid Gabriel would try to steal the baby?” Mom asked.

As she said those words, I felt like I had swallowed sand. “No, Mom, he wouldn’t do such a thing without me knowing,” I said, fully aware it wasn’t me whom he wanted to hurt. “Take a deep breath. Ask Dad to do the same and lock all doors. That way, you’ll feel safer.”

“Okay, honey. After talking to you, I feel assured,” Mom said.

When she hung up, Mei couldn’t wait to ask me what had happened.

“Athena disappeared for a bit and then returned all distressed,” I explained.

“What do you think happened? Was it Gabriel?”

“No, it couldn’t be him. I believe she time-traveled,” I said.

“What? I’ve never heard of babies traveling through time.”

“Well, she’s different. I was pregnant on my last time travel. Apparently, the experience granted her supernatural abilities. I knew of this from the “prophecy” everyone keeps telling me about, but I never expected it to happen so soon.”

“That could turn dangerous.”

“Since she only vanished for around five minutes, she probably only entered the time continuum, never arriving at a destination.”
