“I cannot wait to hear what you have to impart, but first, we must defeat several dozen men eager to kill us at any moment,” said Kira, already in attack mode.

Having Kira by my side made me relax a bit, but the battle had yet to end. With her abilities, we had a chance. A small but real chance.

“All the vampires got captured. How did you avoid the other side of the electrical fence?” I asked.

“The short answer is I was late. But not because I wished to do so. More like the message was received late. After I was released and arrived at the castle, the incursion already took place. My biggest surprise was seeing His Majesty trapped in the armored vehicle.” Kira scratched the back of her head, still struggling to understand how it happened.

“It was my fault. I told Mr. Iglesias about Gabriel’s weakness. But I cannot understand how they lured him in.”

“I’m sure Mr. Iglesias also knows about His Majesty’s other weaknesses.”

“What other weaknesses?” I asked.

“You and Athena, Milady.” Kira smiled. “They probably told him they had either or both of you inside the tank, and His Majesty lost his mind and went to save you.”

The realization tasted bitter-sweet. We were indeed his weakness, and anyone with a hammer instead of a head would use us as leverage to get to him. “We must get him out of there.”

“That would be easier said than done.”

“Not only do we have to save Gabriel. Troy is badly hurt as well.”

“Troy is hurt?” Kira’s face turned wry.

“Yes, I barely escaped from Mr. Iglesias upstairs.”

“I’m sorry to inform you, Milady, but they let you go intentionally. They knew you didn’t have a chance at escaping. They must be collecting data in the study or the library downstairs.”

“How do you know that?” I asked.

“They probably wanted to see where you would go and hoped you would divulge more information unknowingly. You did well by running downstairs and not through the secret passage.”

“This information doesn’t make me any prouder. Any minor misgiving on my part and everything comes crumbling down,” I said dejectedly.

“It is not your fault, Milady. Our world has always been like this, but you came in contact with it only recently. It makes sense not to know all the details.”

Her kind words made my gaping pit of guilt shrink a bit.

“I can smell burnt paper,” she said.

“What? Are they burning the books? We need to stop them. Gabriel will be devastated. He put so much effort into collecting them.”

“We must not let our emotions govern our decisions. Let’s focus on freeing His Majesty. He’ll take care of the rest.”

We tiptoed out of the kitchen and went toward the main entrance doors. The carnage outside had ended with vampires dead or half-alive behind an electrical dome. How was it possible for mere humans to defeat vampires?

“I’ll open the door, Milady. You follow behind,” said Kira.

I turned for a second toward the upper floors. The whiff of burnt books had already reached my nose, and it gripped my heart. The evil ogres started destroying everything.

“Milady, we must focus now. One mistake, and they win,” Kira said, still assessing our surroundings.

I nodded and stood behind her. Once Kira opened the door, a loud beeping sound resounded across the entire courtyard.

“What’s happening?” I asked.

“They set an alarm in case you planned to escape through the front doors.”

Out of nowhere, a flock of armed men appeared, holding batons. An unusual weapon if you asked me. Did they plan to tickle Kira with it till she surrendered? I couldn’t imagine a vampire getting hurt by a stick. But once the armed men hit Kira, it became clear. The batons weren’t only charged electrically. The current was discharged through a silver tip. Now everything made sense. Silver burned vampire skin but was also an efficient electric conductor. Through these batons, they merged silver and electrical currents and created a lethal combination. Mr. Iglesias’s department waited long for the right information to pop up. It just happened I was the one who brought it on a silver plate.
