I succumbed to his pleading and tasted it. It didn’t taste like regular blood. More like myrrh, nectar, and ambrosia in one. “I never thought your blood would taste so sweet,” I said, overindulging in the red liquid. The pain from the wounds dissipated, but somehow that became the least of my worries.

“It’s vampire venom from the primordial source, my love. The entrancement is much stronger if you drink it. You’ll lose control and memories for a while, but it’s for the better.”

Slowly, I succumbed to my reveries and into Gabriel’s arms, but not before I saw a menacing flock of crows circling the castle.

Chapter 11

Iopened my eyes to our bedroom’s canopy and rose quickly to a seated position. Silence settled in the corners of the room. I hadn’t felt so rested in so long. Maybe there was something good about vampire venom. I got out of bed and into the bathroom. The person looking at me in the mirror didn’t resemble me in the slightest. At least not the person I always imagined myself to be. Even though the bruises and scrapes disappeared from my body, my eyes exuded exhaustion and turmoil. I went full speed ahead on what life could grant me and what I could hold. One thing I knew for sure, though, was that I would relive it again. Next to Gabriel, I would go for a second round if necessary. And for this exact reason, we had to find enough strength to finish what we discussed before Mr. Iglesias became vampire chowder.

“You are most beautiful in ordinary settings,” a male voice said.

I turned to see Gabriel handing me a cup of coffee. “You’re here. Sometimes, I fear you’ll leave me unexpectedly.”

He went supersonic into my personal space and hugged me. “You know I did it for the love I couldn’t control.”

“I know.”

We stayed in silence, reveling in each other’s presence.

“I never got to ask, is Kira okay?”

“She fought with great valor yesterday, but when I got to Kira, the bastards were almost done killing her. I had to feed her some of my blood.”

“Thank you,” I said.

“I need to be the one thanking both of you. You both acted braver than medieval knights.”

“You are one to know.” I giggled.

“Don’t tell me you miss the olden days,” Gabriel said.

“Sometimes. But mostly, I miss the studded leather vests,” I said.

“I presume you are remembering something naughty.” Gabriel smiled mischievously.

“I would never. Maybe a little.” I bit my thumb.

He didn’t hesitate and gave me a peck on the mouth. His tongue protruded through the seam of my lips, and suddenly, we found ourselves in a full-blown bathroom make-out session. I wished to indulge longer in Gabriel’s embrace, but there was still much to discuss. “I saw crows circling the castle before I fainted.”

“Yes, they were sent by Vedoma.”

“So she knows about the attack?” I asked.

“I believe she facilitated it.”

“How? Do not tell me she was in cahoots with Mr. Iglesias. That would be preposterous.”

“No.” He chuckled. “You must understand our vampire society has been on every major political power’s radar since the beginning. Numerous attempts have been made to capture us, but most ended with one or two prisoners who either defeated their capturers or received a stake to the heart. But none have betrayed me or our secret location. One of those attempts started with your history teacher, who was planted at your college way before you entered the scene.”

“You mean Mr. Iglesias already knew about me even before I knew about you?” I asked.

“Indeed so. The rumor of me waiting for my beloved had spread across ages, and I assume they had a way of determining vampires from regular people. Which most likely lead them to the campus.”

“So basically, you sent your people to follow me, and they sent their people to follow your people. Talk about a trail of stalkers. And I never noticed a thing.” I realized the horror of being stalked unknowingly for so long.

“Don’t feel bad.” He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “You weren’t ready to find out the truth.”

“So when you met Mr. Iglesias at the campus, you knew he was part of the Special Forces.”
